ANNOUNCEMENTS

Applications for membership in the Carl A. Elliott Society are due Oct. 22. The Elliott Society is an honor society dedicated to increasing access to education and to educational opportunities in both the city of Tuscaloosa and the state of Alabama. Freshmen through seniors are welcome to apply. More information: Caitlin Clark.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of Career Connection, a program developed through UA’s Professional Staff Assembly to connect students with UA professionals who hold similar career interests. Through this initiative, students can develop a relationship with a UA professional and participate in a short-term job-shadowing process. Students and professionals will be matched according to the student’s field of study and the professional’s area of knowledge. Visit www.sa.ua.edu/psa/careerconnection.cfm for an application. HelpDesk is now IT Service Desk, fully staffed with professionals and students who are receiving enhanced training and education on core IT services. IT Service Desk now provides 24-hour phone support and has new contact information: 348-5555 or itsd@ua.edu.

EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

Students can meet U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt of Alabama today at 7 p.m. in 360 Ferguson Student Center. The meet-and-greet is hosted by the College Republicans. More information: CadeAnn Smith.

 Alcohol Awareness Week continues through Oct. 22 and includes the following events:

  • The Red Flags of Awareness display on the Quad will feature 1,900 red flags that represent the national number of college students who have died from alcohol misuse and abuse. Judicial Board members from the Office of Student Judicial Affairs will distribute red ribbons for awareness throughout campus. More information: Paula Perry at 348-5655.
  • The Office of Student Judicial Affairs and the Office of Health Promotion and Wellness will have a table on the Quad near the Red Flag of Awareness display on Oct. 20, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The groups will distribute alcohol-poisoning-tip cards, blood-alcohol-concentration cards and other useful information promoting responsible decision making regarding alcohol.   • The Save-A-Life Tour will be at the Ferguson Student Center on Oct. 21, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. This event features a drunk-driving simulator that gives students the opportunity to experience firsthand the effects of driving under the influence of alcohol and the effects of being a passenger in a car with an intoxicated driver. Academic Integrity Week continues through Oct. 22 with the theme “Champions don’t cheat. Choose integrity!” and includes the following events:

  • Steven Anderson, Tuscaloosa city police chief, and Patrick Murphy, UA softball coach, will address students about living and leading with integrity in the Ferguson Center Ballroom at 7 p.m. today.
  • On Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. in 118 Graves Hall, a panel discussion on academic integrity will feature current UA football player Nico Johnson, the president of the Academic Honors Council, Student Government Association representatives and faculty members. More information: Angel King. 

Housing and Residential Communities will host an Off-Campus Housing Fair Oct. 20, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., on the main floor of the Ferguson Student Center. Students can learn about the variety of rental properties and which off-campus housing options are available for next year. More information: Julie Elmore at jelmore@sa.ua.edu.

The Anderson Society senior leadership honorary is selling homecoming T-shirts through Oct. 20 for $10, payable by cash or check. Shirts are available at a table in the Ferguson Student Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or can be purchased from Anderson Society members.

Students interested in storytelling, service learning, art therapy, video production or Alzheimer’s disease research have an opportunity to improve the quality of life for dementia patients through “Art to Life!,” a new Spring Semester 2011 course. Interested students can attend an information session Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. in 173 Nott Hall. More information: Meg McCrummen.

President Robert E. Witt and other UA officials will answer questions from students during the Nov. 2 “Straight to the Top” forum hosted by the Eta Chi chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. The forum begins at 6 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. More information: Isaiah Clemons.

Bama Dining is offering students a chance to win a 3D Blu-ray disc player with Wi-Fi or a $50 gift card for participating in a brief online survey until Oct. 22. Responses are confidential. Click here to begin the survey.

 The Breast Cancer Honor and Remembrance Tree project continues. Students can write messages to breast cancer patients or survivors on pink ribbon ornaments during October at the following locations: Ferguson Student Center, Women’s Resource Center, Capstone Village or Student Health Center.  Dating/Domestic Violence Month continues. Contact Maria Perez-Fisher at 348-5040 for information on the following events:

  • HopeLine Project, Oct. 19-31; old cell phones dropped off at the following locations will be refurbished and given to victims of domestic violence for making life-saving calls: the Women’s Resource Center, 230 Ferguson Student Center, 104 Manly Hall, Rose Towers and Tutwiler Hall
  • Clothesline Project, Oct. 19-20, Crossroads Lounge, Ferguson Student Center; display of T-shirts personally decorated by domestic violence victims
  • Candlelight Vigil, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m., Denny Chimes; UA alumna and poet Caneeka Miller will speak and singer-songwriter Channing Coker will perform

 Students who would like to learn more about the stigmas surrounding mental illness and ways to break those stigmas can attend the Oct. 25, 5 p.m., meeting of the UA chapter of NAMI. NAMI is affiliated with the Tuscaloosa chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Health. The meeting will be in Gordon Palmer Hall. Free pizza will be available. Phi Sigma Pi national co-ed honors fraternity is collecting toiletries and beauty products throughout October for a local women’s shelter. Travel-size toiletries are acceptable. More information: Samantha Silor.

The Student Alumni Association will host a free Halloween festival for the children in the Tuscaloosa area on Oct. 26, 5-8 p.m., on the front lawn of Alumni Hall, which is located on Bryant Drive. The UA Junior Panhellenic will host Sorority Row Trick-or-Treat on Oct. 26, 6-8 p.m. at the sorority houses on Magnolia Drive and Colonial Drive. The event is free and open to the public. More information: Megan Hayes.

The EveryWoman Book Club will discuss “If I Am Missing Or Dead” by Janine Latus Oct. 27 at noon at the University Club to recognize Dating/Domestic Violence Awareness Month. “INVASION — Representations of Cancer: Combining Medical and Military Metaphors” by Patricia Davis runs through Oct. 29 in the Ferguson Student Center Art Gallery. This is Davis’ first solo exhibition. She is a McNair Scholar who is majoring in studio art.

Intercollegiate Athletics conducts tours of Bryant-Denny Stadium Monday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. and noon. Tours are unavailable during University holidays or on Fridays prior to home football games. Tours are $5 per person. Children under the age of 1 year are admitted free. Nonprofit organizations or schools may obtain a group rate of $2 per person. Click here for more information.
