UA to induct three into its CIS Hall of Fame

The University of Alabama College of Communication and Information Sciences Hall of Fame will induct three communication and information leaders tonight in a ceremony at the NorthRiver Yacht Club. The college’s board of visitors established the Communication Hall of Fame in 1998 to honor those who have brought lasting fame to Alabama through their civic and professional accomplishments. Rama Jama’s to host national news show

Charles Joseph “Joe” Scarborough is being inducted into the 2010 Hall of Fame for the College of Communication and Information Sciences tonight, and he is bringing his talk show with him. “Morning Joe,” MSNBC’s weekday morning news show, will be broadcast live from Rama Jama’s café on Greensboro Avenue Friday morning from 5 to 8, upon Scarborough’s request…Scarborough graduated with his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Alabama in 1985. He is now returning to his alma mater 25 years later to be honored for his success in the communications arena at a national level. “In many respects, he has risen to the top of his profession,” said Loy A. Singleton, dean of the College of Communication and Information Sciences. “He is nationally known, and we want to recognize an alum who demonstrates a high level of expertise in the skills that we use and teach.”…

UA concludes most comprehensive school bus seat belt study ever

UA receives grant to protect construction workers

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has awarded the UA College of Continuing Studies division of environmental and industrial programs a $191,000 grant to help improve workplace safety in construction-oriented companies in the South…The University will use the Susan Harwood Targeted Topic Training Grant to combat this statistic by raising awareness about work safety with local companies in both Alabama and Mississippi. Darrell Dechant, executive director of the division of environmental and industrial programs in the College of Continuing Studies, says that the grant will be used to help develop fall safety and health management classes that will be free to local residential, commercial and industrial construction companies…

Tuscaloosa in U.S. top 10 in jobless decline

…Ahmad Ijaz, an analyst with the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama, said an unemployment rate drop can be attributed to other factors. “One is people dropped off the labor force,” Ijaz said. “Once you drop out of the labor force, you are no longer considered unemployed.” During the year cited, federal unemployment compensation may have kept unemployed workers from serious job searches, affecting the rate. Ijaz said the number of employees “covered” by workers’ compensation insurance is actually dropping in Alabama while the number of uncovered jobs is increasing, an indication that there is not full employment. “If you add people who want a full-time job, but can only get a part-time job, their uncovered rate is almost 17.1 percent,” Ijaz said. “Alabama’s would be close to around 15 or 16 percent.”…

Ferg holds reception for first female SGA president

Libby Anderson Cater Halaby, the first female president of the Student Government Association at the University of Alabama will attend a reception in her honor today at 5 p.m. in the Anderson Room of the Ferguson Center. “She will be presented with a key to the city by Tuscaloosa City Councilwoman Cynthia Almond at a reception, and she will speak to the SGA at 6:15 p.m.,” UA spokeswoman Cathy Andreen, said in an e-mailed statement. Halaby served as president from 1944-45, according to Kayla Lisenby, historian for the Anderson Society. “She was the first female president of the University of Alabama SGA and demonstrated exemplary leadership during a tumultuous time in history,” Lisenby said…

Regions Bank donates bikes to UA

…Today Regions Bank donated 25 lime-green bicycles to Bama Bikes, a bicycle rental program at the University of Alabama.

Student brings Angel Flight Soars program to Alabama

A.J. Ramey, a junior majoring in political science and business, brought the Angel Flight Soars program, based out of Atlanta, to Alabama this past June. The program is intended to provide transportation to medical patients whose needs cannot be met in their own areas…Ramey is a full-time student as well as the Alabama branch director for Angel Flight, so he said any volunteer help he receives with Angel Flight is greatly appreciated. Ramey said students who volunteer have the opportunity to learn more about grant writing, help with administrative work and aid in pilot recruitment…

EDITORIAL: Little-known event is getting attention

…On May 6, unoccupied Dressler Hall — where Ferguson Center now stands — was torched, and it took nearly two weeks of police and Alabama National Guard patrols to completely restore order. This somewhat hidden history will be remembered in vivid detail Friday in a ‘Days of Rage’ conference at the Capstone Hotel. Several of those who participated or observed what happened on the UA campus will engage in a roundtable discussion to bring those 40-year-old memories back to life…

Black Student Union hosts screening of CNN documentary series

 “Almighty Debt,” the latest installment of the CNN series “Black in America” will be showcased in Reese Phifer Hall room 180 at 7 tonight. This TV special, hosted by Soledad O’Brien, will delve into topics that plague several communities, such as financial hardships in the current recession, but it will particularly focus on the black community. “Our organization was able to learn more about the series from [George] Daniels in the communications school,” said Crystalline Jones, vice president of the Black Student Union. “He wanted us to host a screening of the documentary and spark conscious discussion among students on campus.” After the screening, there will be a discussion panel that will give their insight about the issues of finances and faith, and the panel will be streamed to the CNN website live… “The ‘Black in America’ franchise is a series of films that began in July 2008,” said George Daniels, associate professor in the department of journalism…
