UA conference to focus on campus unrest in 1970
Tuscaloosa News – Oct. 20
On May 6, 1970, University of Alabama students protesting the deaths of four students killed in an anti-war rally at Kent State, set fire to an abandoned building on the UA campus, touching off nearly two weeks of unprecedented unrest at the Capstone and the arrest of dozens of students by UA and Tuscaloosa Police and the Alabama National Guard…The nearly two weeks from May 6 until May 19, during which the university was locked down and under virtual martial law, will be remembered Friday as part of “Days of Rage: A 40 Years’ Perspective” mini-conference at the Hotel Capstone. The conference, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. is sponsored in part by the UA’s department of history and is free and open to the public…

State to release school bus seat belt study next week

State senator stresses need for women in politics

As the fourth and final speaker in the Women’s Political Initiative lectures series, Sen. Vivian Figures encouraged about 60 young women to move past the initial challenges women in politics face in order to do something great. “The rules are different for us, ladies,” she said. Figures now serves as the chairwoman of the Senate Education Committee, Mobile Senate Local Delegation and the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee for License Plates, but she remembered the struggles when she began her political career in 1984…

College Republicans hosted a speech by Congressman Robert Aderholt, who represents the 4th District of Alabama on Tuesday where he discussed how he got involved with politics, as well as his current reelection campaign…

Here it is, University of Alabama fans: Your new Crimson tartan

Think Alabama fans care about their school colors? A whopping 410,170 votes were cast, a panel of judges has voted and “We Are Crimson” has been chosen as the official tartan of the University of Alabama. The winning design came from Linnzi Rich of Stevenson, a junior majoring in clothing, textile and interior design. Rich was announced as the winner at the College of Human Environmental Sciences’ recent Homecoming Convocation…Rich will receive a $1,000 scholarship as well as a percentage of sales made from the tartan. Additional profits will be placed in a scholarship fund to assist Human Environmental Sciences’ students..

Dr. Singleton delivers state of the college address

…This afternoon, students and faculty gathered in the rotunda of Reese Phifer to hear the state of the college address from Dr. Loy Singleton. In his address, he talked about all the awards given to the college’s broadcast operations, as well as the top notch faculty.  He also talked about record enrollment in his college, which is 2,700 students this fall.
