UA Awarded OSHA Grant to Improve Workplace Safety

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has awarded The University of Alabama College of Continuing Studies division of environmental and industrial programs a $191,000 Susan Harwood Targeted Topic Training Grant.

Targeted Topic Training Grants support the development of quality occupational safety and health training materials and programs that address workplace hazards and establish prevention strategies.

“We are pleased and thankful that OSHA recognized our college with this grant. It is further evidence of our growing reputation nationally in the area of occupational health and safety,” said Dr. Carolyn Dahl, dean of the college.

The grant will be used to develop a fall protection/safety and health program management system training program that will be offered at no charge to residential, commercial and industrial construction companies throughout Alabama and Mississippi, according to Dr. Darrell Dechant, executive director of the division of environmental and industrial programs in the college.

“This grant will enable the University to help Alabama and Mississippi construction companies protect their employees from the leading cause of death on the job which is falls,” Dechant said.
