UA launches program to help student veterans
Tuscaloosa News – Sept. 24
The University of Alabama launched a program Thursday that will help student veterans adjust to life on campus after serving in the military. The Veterans Education and Transition Support initiative will provide academic and personal support for veterans entering or re-entering college, including help with unresolved problems related to combat. “This is really going to be revolutionary for veterans on campus,” said Ashkan Bayatpour, the founder of the Campus Veterans Association. “Now, the University of Alabama is making an active effort to reach out to veterans.” To celebrate the new program, UA held a luncheon for campus veterans Thursday that featured an address by national veterans expert Floyd Meshad… The VETS program will bring together resources from several UA departments and will maintain collaborative relationships with campus and community organizations that include the Campus Veterans Association, the University of Alabama National Alumni Association and the VETS Advisory Board. More than 600 individuals receive benefits through the university’s veterans benefit program, but that figure includes student veterans and their dependents…

UA builds relations with Cuba

…Oct. 10 – 14, the Bryant Conference Center will be hosting Cuba Week. Attendees will sit in on different sessions with topics ranging from the importance of the Alabama-Cuba relationship to the University’s study abroad program there. Chip Cooper, a faculty member in the UA College of Arts and Sciences, has been shooting photographs alongside Cuban photographer Nestor Marti to produce a book about Old Havana. Cooper said he has taken students to Cuba to study for a semester. “It’s the most amazing place I’ve ever photographed,” Cooper said. “Most Americans have no clue about this incredible country so we are doing a book sponsored by Dean Bob Olin from the College of Arts and Sciences and Dr. Eusebio Leal, City of Havana Historian.”… “In addition to a semester-abroad program for the UA undergraduate students, this progressive partnership has captured the creative potential and intellectual spirit of our two cultures with one common goal – to promote change in our respective communities through uniting our talent,” Olin said in the release…

Freshmen seek job advice

College-based centers that provide career counseling services say they have seen an increase in freshmen seeking employment advice. Officials with career centers at Shelton State Community College, Stillman College and the University of Alabama say that a poor job market has spurred first-year students to take action… Brandon Bowen, manager of employer relations and recruiting at the UA Career Center, said that a little early planning pays dividends immediately for the students. From a developmental standpoint, having that strategic, thought-planning process helps them (not) feel like they’re wandering aimlessly along,” Bowen said. “It helps them stay focused.

Alabama’s auto production nearly two-thirds ahead of ’09’s pace

… Alabama’s auto industry comeback is due to the companies that are a part of it and not just the cyclical nature of the business, said Jim Cashman, a management professor at the Univer­sity of Alabama. Cashman said Hyundai and Honda in particular are building vehicles that appeal to the cost-conscious. “These are organizations that are making high-quality products that are also fitting within the pocketbook of the average consumer,” he said…

HCA air Arkansas game at The Zone

The Honors College and Honors College Assembly are hosting a viewing of the Arkansas game for Honors students this Saturday in The Zone. The Honors GameDay Extravaganza will take place from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 25, according to the event’s Facebook page. The page said the event is limited to 500 Honors College students in good standing with the Honors College. Full Moon Bar-B-Que is catering the event, and the cost for students is $8. Students attending should bring their ACTion Card, according to the page…The Extravaganza is an attempt by the Honors College to provide a complete UA experience for Honors students, said Jonathan Pittman, Honors College Freshman Year Experience Intern…
