Hurricane Katrina Retrospective Hosted by UA Crossroads Community Center

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama Crossroads Community Center will host “Remembering Hurricane Katrina: Five Years Later” at 5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 16, at the Crossroads Lounge, 232 Ferguson Center.

The commemorative event will feature a panel discussion and photo exhibit by Brice Miller, assistant director of Crossroads who is from New Orleans.

“On this fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina we are revisiting its impact on the victims, especially those from my native New Orleans,” Miller says.

Miller will participate in the discussion along with Neecha Turner, a UA staff member who moved to Tuscaloosa from New Orleans following Katrina, and Sheldon L. “Shelly” Rosenzweig, a veteran crisis counselor from Tuscaloosa.

The photo exhibit will feature New Orleans in 2005 and 2010.

“What is interesting about these photos is that in many cases they appear unchanged. During the fifth anniversary coverage of Katrina many media reports made it seem like business as usual in New Orleans. While that may be true of the more touristy areas of the city, the farther you move toward the outlying communities you can see many people still struggling and much devastation remaining,” Miller notes.

In addition to an open forum for sharing personal experiences, Rosenzweig will discuss the physiological implications Katrina victims still face.

The event is open to the public.
