‘Enemy of the People’ Pits Doctor Against Town on UA Stage

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Henrik Ibsen’s classic play “An Enemy of the People” will be presented Monday, Oct. 4, through Sunday, Oct. 10 in the Gallaway Theatre on Stadium Drive in the UA Theatre District as part of The University of Alabama’s theatre and dance department season.

“An Enemy of the People,” adapted by Christopher Hampton, illustrates the universal themes of individuals versus the masses. Dr. Thomas Stockmann, a pillar of a popular coastal town, discovers the local waters are contaminated and seeks to remedy it.

But as tourists continue to become sick, he encounters resistance with his brother, the town’s mayor, and local townspeople who fear the doctor’s exposure will financially cripple the town. Stockmann must face the violent crowds and his own fears by standing alone for the greater good — one brave man’s struggle to do the right thing against intolerance, corruption and the irrational.

Performances are at 7:30 pm Monday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets can be bought at the theatre & dance box office in Rowand-Johnson Hall from noon to 5 p.m. or by phoning 205/348-3400. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for UA faculty, staff and seniors and $12 for students. Tickets for $10 are available for groups of 10 or more.

The department of theatre and dance is part of UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships in the USA Today Academic All American Team.
