TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — “Screwtape,” a play by James Forsyth based on C.S. Lewis’ “The Screwtape Letters,” will be presented Monday, Sept. 20, through Sunday, Sept. 26, in the Allen Bales Theatre in Rowand-Johnson Hall. The show kicks off The University of Alabama department of theatre and dance’s 2010-2011 season.
The play tells the story of Screwtape, a senior devil who is assigned to observe and guide his nephew Wormwood, a junior fiend. Wormwood’s first assignment is to seize the soul of Mike, a young engineer trying to make his way in the world. Despite his love for a young girl, Mike is facing terrible danger as Screwtape’s advice to Wormwood targets the human’s shortcomings.
As a devilish dramatic contest develops, thrashed out in brilliant low-level comedy, “Screwtape” offers a nail-bitingly close decision, and lessons about heaven, hell, humanity and religion are revealed in a dazzling resolution.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10. Tickets can be bought from noon to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday at the box office in Rowand-Johnson Hall, by phoning 205/348-3400 or by going to www.ua.tix.com.
The department of theatre and dance is part of UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships in the USA Today Academic All American Team.
