Alabama climbs 17 spots in annual magazine rankings

The University of Alabama climbed 17 spots to its highest position ever in the ranking of universities published annually by the U.S. News & World Report. UA was ranked 79th among large public and private research universities, up from 96th just a year ago, according to the magazine’s “Best Colleges” edition. After removing private schools from the list, UA ranks 34th among public universities, its best showing. UA prominently touts itself as a top 50 public institution in promotional and recruitment material…

Osher Lifelong Learning Program Receives $1 Million Endowment

Some big news for the Osher lifelong learning program at the University of Alabama. They received a one million dollar endowment today. Program coordinators told us they’re going to try and operate off the interest the endowment will generate each year, which they expect to be about 5-percent.

UA hosts biggest Rush in nation

…1,610 women lined up at 15 doors on sorority row, taking part in the largest formal recruitment in UA and U.S. history. Gentry McCreary, director of Greek Affairs, said the University continues to progress as being one of the top schools for recruitment. “For the past several years we have been among the top three universities with the largest group of women going through formal recruitment,” McCreary said. “This year’s reports have us in the number one slot followed by Indiana University.”…

Alabama Action students volunteer at Hillcrest

Honors college freshmen looking to give back to the Tuscaloosa community and meet some new friends need to look no further than Alabama Action. The program, run by the University of Alabama’s Honors College, brings together incoming freshmen for projects in local schools…Lima said the students paint, landscape and renovate schools. The program typically chooses two elementary schools for the weeklong sessions, but chose Hillcrest Middle School this year…The Honors freshmen work with students during the day and sit for lectures on socio-economic issues in the community during the evenings. Lima said the evening lectures included a speech by Mayor Walt Maddox about the dynamics of Tuscaloosa…

BBVA Compass report examines impact of BRAC transfers

…The article was written by Ahmad Ijaz and Carolyn Trent of the University of Alabama’s Center for Business and Economic Research. The authors also estimate that every $1 billion of BRAC-related contract expenditures in Alabama will produce statewide about $2 billion in state GDP, nearly $500 million in earnings and about 11,000 direct and indirect jobs…During a webcast Tuesday to release the publication’s results, Sam Addy, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research, called the Huntsville region a “high-growth area” in terms of population and development. “Huntsville is a shining star in this recession,” he said…

Rock band Kansas will perform 2 Tuscaloosa concerts in September

The rock band Kansas, known for such hits as “Carry On Wayward Son” and “Dust in the Wind,” will perform with the University of Alabama Huxford Symphony Orchestra, according to a news release. The concerts will be Sept. 9 and Sept. 10 in the Concert Hall of Moody Music Building in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Band drummer Phil Ehart said the shows will be “full-blown concerts with pro lights and sound.” Proceeds from the show will benefit the school of music at Alabama…

Campus gallery showcases student art

The University of Alabama Department of Art and Art History kicks off the school year with an art exhibit showcasing four new talents in the Studio Arts Program. The show, Incoming!, opens today in Sella-Granata Art Gallery and runs through Friday, Sept. 10. It will premiere Thursday with a reception for the artists and the public…

New program allows students to donate unused meal plans

Student 2 Student, a newly launched meal plan program created in partnership with Bama Dining, the Parents Association, Dean of Students and the Student Government Association, will allow students to donate meal plans to other students in hardship. The idea for the program came about in October after board members of the Parents Association noticed that some students were failing to use all of the meal plans they’d purchased at the beginning of the semester.   “We got together with Bama Dining and asked how we could utilize some of these meals to assist students in need, and this program became the result,” said Sara Hartley, assistant director of parent programs…

Bryant-Denny Stadium completes new south end zone
