TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s department of theatre and dance presents the Richard Greenberg play “The Violet Hour” from Tuesday, April 13, to Sunday, April 18, in the Allan Bales Theatre on Stadium Drive in the UA Theatre District.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets can be bought at the Theatre & Dance Box Office from noon to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday in Rowand-Johnson Hall, by calling 205/348-3400, or online at www.theatre.ua.edu.

It’s 1919 in New York City. World War I is over. The nation stands on the brink of hopefulness for the new century, and the focus is on entertainment and the arts. And the arts respond with the sultry soul of jazz rolling through radios, dazzling the crushed American spirit.
The writers — the real celebrities of the day — let Americans vicariously live the glamorous life through the autobiographical nature of their stories. Which will the driven young John Pace Seavering publish with his carefully guarded stash of cash — the racy memoirs of his Harlem jazz singer lover or the unwieldy novel of his former college roommate? Friendship and love hang in the balance.
Master of Fine Arts student Matthew Burkholder is the director.
The department of theatre and dance is part of UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships on the USA Today Academic All American Team.
