UA to Host Technology Leadership Conference for Students

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.  — The University of Alabama will host the 31st Annual Alabama Technology Student Association State Leadership Conference involving competition for middle and high school students Monday and Tuesday, April 19-20.

More than 550 students from schools throughout the state are expected to participate in more than 50 events held at the Bryant Conference Center. A sample of scheduled events includes computer-aided design, carbon dioxide powered dragsters, inventions and innovations, flight endurance, structural engineering, and a Jeopardy-style technology bowl.

Participating schools include: Athens High School, Baldwin County High School, Bay Minette Middle School, Brewbaker Technology Magnet High School, Buckhorn High School, Calera Middle School, Central Baldwin Middle School, Clay-Chalkville Middle School, Daphne Middle School, Decatur High School, Dothan Technology Center, Eastwood Middle School, Fairhope High School, Fairhope Middle School, Florence Middle School, Foley High School, Greenville High School, Greenville Middle School, Hewitt-Trussville High School, Homewood Middle School, Huffman Middle School, J.A. Davis, Loveless Academic Magnet Program High School, Mountain Brook Junior High School, Oxford High School, Oxford Middle School, Piedmont High School, Piedmont Middle School, Pizitz Middle School, Pleasant Grove High School, Thompson Middle School, Tuscaloosa Magnet Middle School, Westlawn Middle School.

UA’s College of Engineering is hosting and assisting with overall event coordination.

The Technology Student Association is a national, non-profit organization for middle and high school students with a strong interest in technology and engineering. Since TSA was chartered in 1978, more than 2 million students have participated throughout the country. Alabama’s membership stands at nearly 2,800 student members.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering has more than 2,700 students and over 100 faculty. In the last eight years, students in the College have been named USA TodayAll-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater scholars, Hollings scholars and Portz scholars.
