UA, Bishop State team up for nursing degrees

The University of Alabama’s Capstone College of Nursing is partnering with Bishop State Community College to offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees online.  Registered nurses living in Mobile will be able to pursue and complete degrees in three semesters without ever having to go into a classroom.  “The fact is they can do it online, can stay here and still earn a degree from the University of Alabama,” Sara Barger, dean of the UA’s Capstone College of Nursing, said in Mobile this week.  The Capstone College of Nursing has similar partnerships with 15 other community colleges in Alabama for its RN Mobility program.  “It’s just a great opportunity for our students,” said Kim Rawson, Bishop State’s director of nursing…

Taking a stadium’s temperature

With the blessing of athletics department officials, a University of Alabama professor and student hope to measure the temperatures inside Bryant-Denny Stadium during football games, making it possible to issue warnings when weather conditions make for a troublesome hot spot. “People know they are going to be uncomfortable when they go into a stadium. That’s definitely an expectation,” said David Brommer, a climatology professor in the UA geography department. “Numbers might not mean that much to people, but for emergency responders — they’ll know it’s not just hot, but it’s a situation where you might need to be aware that there is a perfect storm of conditions.”…

The creative process behind the costumes worn in UA productions

…The sketches are the work of Tiffany Towns, a first-year graduate student in the Master of Fine Arts program in the University of Alabama’s theater department…Towns, who received her undergraduate degree in theater from Brenau University in Gainesville, Ga., was selected last fall to be the costume designer for a production of Voltaire’s “Candide.” She is one of eight graduate students studying in the costume design and production program at the university…A typical cast at UA consists of 12 to 18 members. “Candide” boasts 34 actors and 33 full costumes with more than 200 pieces. Every designer keeps a book throughout the process, what they call their “bible,” containing contacts, notes, design ideas, inspiration, receipts and cast measurements.

New thermal energy product created at UA helps bomb-sniffing dogs become more effective

Bomb-sniffing dogs used by the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan have become more effective thanks to research developed on the University of Alabama campus. An inventor and chemist created a thermal-energy product that can be used in textiles to help keep body temperatures at a desired level. It can also be used to keep your coffee hot and your iced tea cold.

Business students to promote sustainability

The Business Honors Program will host Sustainability Day on Tuesday to inform students about a more resourceful living strategy…The idea of a UA sustainability day started when Barry Mason, the dean of the business school went to Jim Cashman, a professor of management, and discussed the fact that all SEC schools, except for two, including the University, had a sustainability day. The two teams decided to speak with grounds, facilities and directors from Bama Dining, Crimson Copies and Bama Printing to know where there were needs…Another fact that the teams are presenting to students is that they have been working closely with Bama Dining to promote reusable mugs. “You can take it to any Bama Dining location, and it’s a 55 cent refill,” Sutton said. “It’s a $9 mug, but they’re reducing it to $6 at all Bama Dining locations for Sustainability Day.”…

…Samuel Addy of the university’s Center for Business and Economic Research estimates an average Alabama home football game results in $14.5 million in economic impact for the Tuscaloosa area, and $21 million for the state. That figure accounts for food, lodging, merchandise and other spending associated with the game. Though A-Day may result in a smaller total, “it wouldn’t be that much smaller over the last three years,” he said…

Green Week showcases creative events at UA

The 19th annual Earthfest on Sunday will promote environmental awareness through local artists, musicians and environmental advocates. Green Week is sponsored by the SGA Department of Environmental Concerns with several events planned throughout the week connected to Earth Day, which is Thursday…UA Environmental Council affiliates include Homegrown Alabama, the UA Arboretum, Outdoor Recreation, the UA Environmental Institute, the Black Warrior River Keeper and several others…Also on Thursday, New York Times reporter Matthew Wald will speak about as part of the Alabama Perspectives on Sustainability and Climate Change. His lecture, “A Low Carb Diet for the Planet: Sustainability Perspectives from Transportation and Energy”, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the UA Biology building…

UA social work students help PAL program in Alberta

…This semester a group from the University of Alabama School of Social Work has been working to get the new PAL gym up and running. One UA student told us why this program is much needed. Melissa Rogers: “They need father figures and they really need a place where they love to be after school.”

Wheelchair basketball gives back

On Friday, the brothers of the UA chapter of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity teamed up with the UA Wheelchair Athletics program, including the 2010 national champion women’s wheelchair basketball team to host “Push Alabama-Campaign for Awareness” on the Quad. The event ran from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The wheelchair athletes showed students who passed by different wheelchairs and athletic training chairs that they use for conditioning, basketball, tennis, track and field and kayaking. This event was the first one that the two organizations have hosted together. Pi Kappa Phi Philanthropy Chairman Brian Sicner said the event was a success…
