UA English Students Take Top Honors at National Convention

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama students won several awards while representing the UA English department at the annual Sigma Tau Delta Convention held recently in St. Louis, Mo.

The First Place Fiction Award was given to Meredith Harper of Alabaster for her piece “Variations on a Large Hadron Collider.” UA student Joshua Clark of Jasper received the Second Place in Poetry Award for his collection “Harbor Lights: A Garland.”

“In a field of 800 submissions from honor students in English from around the country, a number of them graduate students in MA/MFA programs, Meredith’s first place and Joshua’s second place laurels affirm what we all already know and what I was reminded of while watching them present – our students are among the best and the brightest of the best and the brightest,” said Dr. Yolanda Manora, associate professor of English at UA.

During the convention, a delegation of seven UA students presented nine creative works and three critical essays. Along with Harper and Clark, the students who represented UA included Meg Brandl of West Monroe, La., Casey Sloan of Birmingham, Wendy Wong of Daphne, Parker White and Katrina Windon, both of Montgomery.
