TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – International artist Vidvan D. Balakrishna of India will be on the UA campus April 13-15 for a lecture demonstration and concert on the veena, one of the most ancient musical instruments of India.
The veena, an instrument related to the lute and played like a sitar, has a recorded history that dates back to the Vedic Age.
Balakrishna will play the veena in a concert open to the public Thursday, April 15, from 7-8 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. A lecture demonstration will be held for students and the UA community on Tuesday, April 13, from 8:15-9:15 a.m. in the Moody Music recital hall.
Balakrishna received his master’s of science degree from Bangalore University and is currently an employee of the Reserve Bank of India.
The lecture demonstration and concert are sponsored by Capstone International Programs, New College, Asian Studies and University Libraries.
