UA Presents Full-Length ‘Cinderella’ Ballet

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama department of theatre and dance presents the Sergei Prokofiev ballet “Cinderella” from Monday, March 29, to Saturday, April 3, at the Gallaway Theatre in Rowand-Johnson Hall in the UA Theatre District.

The performances represent the first full-length ballet that UA’s dance faculty, through the Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre, has produced.

Rita Snyder, associated professor of theatre and dance, is the director; she is collaborating with choreographers Cornelius Carter, artistic director; Qianping Guo, assistant professor; and Sarah M. Barry, assistant professor, as well as the technical staff of the theatre and dance department.

The ballet premiered in 1945 at the Bolshoi Ballet at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

“The story of ‘Cinderella’ is a universal and timeless one,” Snyder said. “It is the story of good fortune coming to a young lady who finds herself in an unfortunate situation due to circumstances beyond her control. The kindness, patience and good nature of this individual is eventually rewarded.

“Because so many people can relate to the character of Cinderella, it is a story that many have retold in literature, opera, ballet and film.”

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, March 29-April 1; 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 2; and 2 p.m. Saturday, April 3. Tickets are $17 for adults; $15 for UA faculty, staff and senior citizens; and $12 for students and children. The department of theatre and dance is a part of UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships on the USA Today Academic All American Team.
