Capstone Creed Week

Amy Pleasant will speak about her current art and practice tonight at 6:30 in 203 Garland Hall. Along with her current solo exhibit in New York, she has installed a new work at the Birmingham Museum of Art. The event is free.

The Fashion Rocks and So Does My Body Fashion Show will be tonight at 7 in the Ferguson Student Center Theater. In celebration of Body Appreciation Week, this fashion show will feature all sizes to promote healthy body image and prevent eating disorders. Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and Chi Omega sorority are hosting a registration drive on Wednesday, Feb. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for volunteers to be entered into “Be the Match Registry,” a national database of potential bone marrow donors. The drive will be held at the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity house and on Sorority Row. The event is being held in support of Blaise and Madeline Finnegan. Blaise is a UA freshman and member of Pi Kappa Phi, and his sister, Madeline, is a freshman at Huntsville High School. Both have Fanconi anemia and aplastic anemia, diseases of the bone marrow and blood that often lead to acute myeloid leukemia. The drive is not a bone marrow donation event; it is only to register volunteers who will be entered into a national database of donors. A cotton swab of the inside of the cheek will be taken. There is no charge to participate.

UA NSBE will host an open forum with members of the Black Faculty and Staff Association on Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. in 126 H.M. Comer Hall. BFSA members will speak about their experiences at the University. These experiences include being a student, faculty member and staff member and how things have changed from when they came to the University until the present. More information: Kenny Robinson.

The next “pulse-check” lunch with Dr. Judy Bonner, provost, and Dr. Mark Nelson, vice provost, will be Feb. 25 at noon in 204-A Ferguson Student Center. Bring or purchase your lunch for this open-ended discussion about campus issues.

The Hudson Strode Lecture Series in Theory and Criticism presents Jane Gallop, distinguished professor of English and comparative literature at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She will present the essay “The Ethics of Close Reading” on Feb. 25 at 5 p.m. in 301 Morgan Hall. More information: Natalie Loper.

Monday, March 1, through Friday, March 5, the UA community will celebrate the fifth annual Capstone Creed Week, a five-day celebration of the ideals and values we aspire to as a community of learners. The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership is seeking student photograph submissions for a compilation of work to be featured during Capstone Creed Week. Students are asked to submit up to three photographs depicting the Capstone Creed in action, along with a few sentences describing what is taking place in each photo and how it relates to the ideals and values within the Creed. Photographs must be submitted no later than 4 p.m. on March 1 to capstonecreedphotovoiceproject@gmail.com. Students whose submissions are accepted will be notified no later than March 3. The National Alliance of Mental Illness at UA will host a free screening of “Girl, Interrupted” on March 1 from 5-7 p.m. in 351 Gordon Palmer Hall. Snacks will be provided. A brief discussion and general question session about NAMI-UA will follow the film. NAMI-UA meetings are open to any student interested in advocating for mental health and fighting the stigma of mental illness on campus. More information: namiua@bama.ua.edu.

Jami Harris will speak about her investigation of black female hip-hop artists reclaiming masculinity as a way to challenge their dominant stereotypes on Wednesday, March 3, at 12:30 p.m. in 308 Manly Hall. Harris is a graduate student in the women’s studies program at UA. Her talk is the third in a semester-long series of brown-bag lectures sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center and the women’s studies program in the department of gender and race studies. “Connect the Dots: A National Student Conference on Public Dialogue, Deliberation, Community Problem Solving and Action” will be held March 3-6 at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Ala. The New College Community-Based Research Internship Program, in partnership with the David Mathews Center for Civic Life, is sponsoring the conference. The goal of the conference goal is to provide a forum for students to learn how to embed democratic practices in their everyday work and lives. These practices include public dialogue, deliberation, problem solving and action. Students, faculty members, program administrators, practitioners and community members are encouraged to attend. Higher Education Day will be March 4 in Montgomery. All students are invited to attend this free trip to Montgomery to advocate for higher education funding. The Unbound Art Show opening will be March 4 from 5-9 p.m. at the Harrison Galleries in downtown Tuscaloosa. Hosted by the Creative Campus Assembly, VSA Arts of Alabama and the Office of Disability Services, the show will provide opportunities in the arts for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses. “Memoria — The Remix” will be March 5 at 4 p.m. in 226 Lloyd Hall. Victor Villanueva will explore ancient rhetoric and contemporary writing instruction, memory, colonization and cultural history. Villanueva is a Regents Professor at Washington State University. His visit is sponsored by the English department and the graduate program in composition, rhetoric and English studies. UA Opera Theatre presents “The Gondoliers: or the King of Barataria” on March 5, 6 and 7 in the choral-opera room of Moody Music Building Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Creative Campus will host “2010: A Space Oddity” on March 6 in Shelby Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. This event will explore the intersection of space science and science fiction and is free to the public. Registration is encouraged, especially for parties interested in participating in the writing workshops. Registration deadline for the writing workshops is March 1. Elements of A Space Oddity will include lectures, panel discussions, writing workshops and sci-fi inspired art galleries. Other related events prior to March 6 include ABXY, March 4, 7:30 p.m., 38 Lloyd Hall, and Star Gazing, March 5, 7 p.m., Moundville Archaeological State Park. The Women’s Resource Center is hosting the Lunafest film festival on March 9 at the Bama Theatre. A silent auction begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by the films at 7 p.m. Admission is charged. Lunafest is a national film festival that showcases short films by, for and about women to raise awareness about women’s issues, highlight women filmmakers, bring women together in their communities and raise money for the Breast Cancer Fund and the Women’s Resource Center. Prior to Lunafest, the Women’s Resource Center is hosting the Lunafest Lecture Series to raise awareness about Women’s issues and enhance the overall Lunafest experience. The lecture series will be held in the Ferguson Student Center Game Room on March 1 (“Women and Romance in Popular Culture and Film”) at 12:30 p.m. and March 3 (“Women Behind the Camera”) at 2:30 p.m. and will include free snacks and ticket giveaways to the Lunafest films. The Honors College is hosting its first student photography exhibit. The exhibit by Marshall Houston and David Kumbroch is titled “Portraits: Layers of the Black Belt” and will be on display until March 15 in the Nott Hall second-floor lobby. The photojournalism exhibit depicts the lives of seven citizens living in Alabama’s Black Belt region. More information: Ruth Reyes at 348-5574.

University Stewards applications are due Feb. 26 by 4 p.m. University Stewards help UA admissions counselors recruit top students from around the nation by creating personal relationships with prospective students and their families. Stewards also have the opportunity to travel to off-campus admissions receptions, while also serving weekly for on-campus recruitment lunches, escorting visiting students to classes and meetings, and maintaining contact with prospective students after their visits. Pinnacle Non-Traditional Honor Society applications are due March 1. Students who are at least 25 and who are either undergraduates with a 3.0 or higher grade point average or graduates with a 3.4 or higher GPA are eligible to apply. Elliott Society applications are due March 5. The society recognizes students, faculty and alumni who have made significant leadership contributions to the campus, community, state and nation in areas of social and cultural progress and who portray a spirit of the ideals held by Carl Elliott. UA’s Up ’til Dawn program is accepting applications for its executive board. As members of the executive board, students will work closely with their peers to plan the Up ’til Dawn event and raise awareness about St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Impact Alabama has full-time positions available for college graduates for July 2010-11. Several regional coordinator slots are open to work with Focus First and Save First initiatives, which address vision-care needs of low-income children and tax preparation and financial literacy needs of low-income families, respectively. Led by college students and recent college graduates, both initiatives are unique to Alabama in their scope and vision and are beginning to attract national attention for their success. Students who need a letter of transiency may obtain one via myBama. Log in to your myBama account and click on the Student tab. In the Banner Self-Service channel, click on the Student Services folder, then the Student Records folder and then the Letter of Transiency file. Follow the onscreen instructions to generate your letter. Upon completion of the process, a transient letter will be generated in the form of a PDF document. Throughout April, the UA Women’s Resource Center will display the annual “Healing the Wounded Heart” art exhibit in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The Women’s Resource Center is calling all students, faculty and community members affected by violence both directly and indirectly to create a heART piece for the exhibit. Each participant will be provided a wooden heart as a canvas for expression. Hearts will be collected for display through March 24. Participants can get a heart from the Women’s Resource Center.
