EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week continues through Feb. 18. Events include a hunger banquet, a brown-bag lunch with the director of Tuscaloosa’s HOPE Initiative and the “Grate American Sleep Out.” Visit http://volunteer.ua.edu for a complete schedule. All members of the UA community are encouraged to wear pink on Feb. 18 and Feb. 19 in an effort to raise awareness and support for breast cancer research. UA Intercollegiate Athletics is hosting the Power of Pink women’s basketball game with Tennessee on Feb. 18 and the Power of Pink women’s gymnastics meet with Arizona on Feb. 19. Pink luminaries will light the paths to Coleman Coliseum prior to and at both sporting events. UA students get in free to the sporting events with their Action Cards. Opening day of baseball season will be Feb. 20 at 2:05 p.m. as the team hosts South Alabama. All students get in free with their Action Cards.

The Fashion Rocks and So Does My Body Fashion Show will be Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center Theater. In celebration of Body Appreciation Week, this fashion show will feature all sizes to promote healthy body image and prevent eating disorders. The Hudson Strode Lecture Series in Theory and Criticism presents Jane Gallop, distinguished professor of English and comparative literature at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She will present the essay “The Ethics of Close Reading” on Feb. 25 at 5 p.m. in 301 Morgan Hall. More information: Natalie Loper.

Higher Education Day will be March 4 in Montgomery. All students are invited to attend this free trip to Montgomery to advocate for higher education funding. UA outdoor recreation will host a mountain biking trip to Oak Mountain State Park near Birmingham on Feb. 27. More information: Kyle Stephens at 348-7045.

The Honors College is hosting its first student photography exhibit. The exhibit by Marshall Houston and David Kumbroch is titled “Portraits: Layers of the Black Belt” and will be on display until March 15 in the Nott Hall second-floor lobby. The photojournalism exhibit depicts the lives of seven citizens living in Alabama’s Black Belt region. More information: Ruth Reyes at 348-5574.

Share your ADHD story. Researchers on campus are looking for students with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder to share their experiences regarding safety, relationships, managing stress, health and other topics. Please respond to uaadhd@gmail.com by Feb. 17 if interested.

UA students interested in a new, five-week marine science research internship this summer in the Caribbean should apply by Feb. 26 by completing an application at http://www.bsc.ua.edu. One undergraduate and one graduate student will be selected for the internship opportunity on the Bay Island of Roatan, which is off the northern coast of Honduras. Free room and board will be provided to the selected students; all other costs are the responsibility of the students. More information: Dr. Julie Olson at 348-2633.

Students who need a letter of transiency may obtain one via myBama. Log in to your myBama account and click on the Student tab. In the Banner Self-Service channel, click on the Student Services folder, then the Student Records folder and then the Letter of Transiency file. Follow the onscreen instructions to generate your letter. Upon completion of the process, a transient letter will be generated in the form of a PDF document. Applications are available for Pinnacle Non-Traditional Honor Society. Students who are at least 25 and who are either undergraduates with a 3.0 or higher grade point average or graduates with a 3.4 or higher GPA are eligible to apply through March 1. The Elliott Society is accepting applications for membership. The society recognizes students, faculty and alumni who have made significant leadership contributions to the campus, community, state and nation in areas of social and cultural progress and who portray a spirit of the ideals held by Carl Elliott. Elliott was a former SGA president who later became a U.S. congressman. Applications are available online. Deadline: March 5. More information: Korey Hayes.

UA’s Up ’til Dawn program is accepting applications for its executive board. As members of the executive board, students will work closely with their peers to plan the Up ’til Dawn event and raise awareness about St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Preparations for the event will start this spring and continue until next fall. More information: Jessica Pearson.

Impact Alabama has full-time positions available for college graduates for July 2010-11. Several regional coordinator slots are open to work with Focus First and Save First initiatives, which address vision-care needs of low-income children and tax preparation and financial literacy needs of low-income families, respectively. Led by college students and recent college graduates, both initiatives are unique to Alabama in their scope and vision and are beginning to attract national attention for their success. UA has implemented a new policy regulating the use of UA grounds and facilities. The UA Office of Information Technology warns that an e-mail scam was recently sent to UA faculty, staff and student accounts. The scam e-mail requests usernames and passwords for Bama e-mail account upgrades. The message is a phishing scam used to get login information, which will be used by the scammers to hijack user e-mail accounts. Do not click the link or reply with usernames and passwords. Delete the message and take no action. Persons who have already replied to the message should change their passwords immediately. More information: OIT Help Desk.
