T-TOWN: Dept. of Veterans Affairs recognizes UA student film

A film produced by students at the University of Alabama about the challenges faced by returning military veterans is being recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs. According to a UA news release, students in the university’s Documenting Justice filmmaking class produced the documentary film, “Searching for Normal.” The film features four veterans discussing life after tours in Iraq. It also features narrative comments from Dick Powers, an Iraq veteran and one of the UA students who produced the film. Elizabeth Jones was the other. In his opening narrative, Powers talks about one of his grandfathers, an infantry officer who served in Vietnam. The VA posted a link to the film on its Facebook page in late January, after Brandon Friedman, director of new media for the VA, met Powers at a conference in Washington, D.C.

University of Alabama, Nashville charity partnering to collect shoes for Haiti relief efforts

The University of Alabama is partnering with Soles4Souls, a Nashville-based charity, to collect shoes for relief efforts to help the people of Haiti, university officials announced in a media release…We have a goal of collecting 700 pairs of shoes,” said Sara Hartley, UA assistant director of parent programs who is assisting with the UA shoe drive. “So far, we have collected about 450 pairs of shoes to send, but we still need to keep working.” Donations can be dropped off at 230 Ferguson Center until Friday, Feb. 12, at 5 p.m. Closed-toe shoes are preferred but any shoes will be collected. Hartley discovered the idea while researching ways to help the people of Haiti. “I knew that some students may not be able to give a monetary donation but would still like to help,” said Hartley…

UA economists expect unemployment to remain high in 2010

Economists at the University of Alabama’s Center for Business and Economic Research expect Alabama’s manufacturing sector to rebound slightly in 2010 but the state’s employment rate is expected to remain high through the year. Jobs are not expected to rebound any time soon, with payrolls continuing to drop across most sectors at least through midyear, UA’s economists said in a news release…
