UA Graduate Honored for Her Work as an Entrepreneur

A University of Alabama graduate is getting honored for her work as an entrepreneur. Janet Gurwitch co-founded Gurwitch products in 1996 which markets a boutique line that carries cosmetics of the French make-up artist Laura Mercier, which is often called the “make up of the stars.” In 1996, a company out of Michigan bought her company and now serves more than 80 countries.

…Janet Gurwitch graduated from the University of Alabama in 1974…“If you think you can to it, you must go for it and have perseverance,” Gurwitch said Thursday in addressing the annual entrepreneurship awards ceremony at the Hotel Capstone. Gurwitch…became one of two members on its top management board before leaving to become executive vice president at Neiman Marcus. Then the entrepreneurial bug bit, and she left Neiman Marcus in 1996 to found Gurwitch Products, which makes Laura Mercier Cosmetics. She stepped down as the company’s CEO in 2008…The Alabama Entrepreneurship Institute, which promotes entrepreneurship throughout the state and is housed at the University of Alabama’s business college, gave these awards: Social Entrepreneur of the Year to Abigail Hardin, a UA sophomore and founder of Open My Eyes Foundation and author of the children’s book, “Look at Me, I’m Just Like You.” Higher Education Entrepreneurial Educator of the Year to Tommy Hester, a retired Tuscaloosa banker and now an adjunct instructor in UA’s College of Human and Environmental Sciences.
UA real estate researcher says homes growing more affordable in Alabama

Homes in Alabama were more affordable in the final three months of 2009 than they were at any point in the past decade, according to researchers at the University of Alabama. The Alabama Housing Affordability Index rose to 211.2 in the fourth quarter, meaning a family earning the state’s median income had more than twice as much purchasing power to qualify for a loan on the state’s median-priced home. The universiy’s Alabama Center for Real Estate said the state’s fourth quarter results were the strongest in the past decade. In the third quarter, the index for the state stood at 185.9, the center said…

The Capstone Creed, a statement of values listed for students to abide by while attending the University, will be the primary focus of a series of events next week making up Capstone Creed Week. This year a new addition to the creed will be emphasized — individual responsibility. The new addition, which was proposed early November, though only a one-word change, guarantees that students take responsibility for their own actions, as well as look out for others, said Corrie Harris, director of student involvement…
Student exhibit features Black Belt residents

…The Honors College is displaying a photojournalism exhibit by Marshall Houston, who is majoring in economics and English, and David Kumbroch, who is majoring in telecommunications and film with a focus in broadcast journalism, called Portraits and Layers of the Black Belt. The exhibit, located in Nott Hall, depicts the lives of seven citizens living in the Alabama’s Black Belt region…Houston said each of the photographs depicts a person who has defeated obstacles and achieved something great while living in the Black Belt. The majority of the people are from Marion and some from Selma.
UA’S hockey team gets recognition because of Winter Olympics

High school students urged to be leaders, plan for future

High school students who attended the eighth annual Alabama Power Co. Youth Leadership Conference on Thursday heard sobering statistics about how many of them would go on to pursue higher education…Alabama Power vice president Terry Waters welcomed the students, while Charles Karr, dean of the University of Alabama’s College of Engineering talked with the students about striving for excellence. “Each and every one of you can strive to shine a light in a dark room. You have to choose to make a positive difference,” Karr said… other speakers at this year’s conference included Virginia Johnson, associate vice president at UA…
