Witt sees enrollment growth on horizon
Tuscaloosa News – Jan. 29
The University of Alabama expects to see a record number of applications for admission next fall, along with continued enrollment growth, President Robert Witt said Thursday. UA should have about 20,000 applications from freshmen wanting to come to UA, which would be a record, Witt said in a speech to an audience made up of mostly retirees for the Osher Lifelong Learning Center’s speaker series, Leadership Alabama. Although the university enrolled more than 28,000 students this past fall and reached Witt’s original enrollment goal, he said he envisions student growth to continue. Student enrollment could top out in the “low- to mid-30s,” he said, meaning more than 30,000 students. Enrollment growth, particularly of non-Alabama residents, has been crucial in helping the university weather the economic recession and accompanying state budget cuts without employee furloughs or job losses. However, there have been no pay raises for employees for two years. Witt said the university should be able to withstand another cut in state money. “We continue to build up reserves as best we can to absorb whatever happens,” Witt said. “We can absorb proration.”
