Alabama development panel adds university presidents

…EDPA President Bill Taylor told Birmingham business leaders that two university presidents have been added to his group’s board, a first…University of Alabama President Robert Witt and University of Alabama at Birmingham President Carol Garrison were elected to the board, underscoring the importance the EDPA puts on higher education…”Having this representation on our board will assist us in achieving one of our major goals, which is alignment of Alabama’s economic development resources,” Taylor said. “Universities are involved in nearly every facet of economic development, from work force development, to existing industry support, to the birth of new technologies.”…Witt, who is finishing his sixth year as president and is also a member of the Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority, said Tuesday that his seat on the EDPA board formalizes the university’s role in economic development efforts. “Economic development is a key part of the University of Alabama’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life of all Alabamians,” he said.

Committees help Haiti with immediate needs

…The committee’s current goals will be executed in phases, Bayatpour said. The first phase is focused on collecting monetary donations in the Ferguson Center to help with immediate need. The CSC will be collecting donations for the next two weeks from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ferguson Center, Burford said…Sara Hartley, assistant director of parent programs, said she is encouraging students to make donations of new and used shoes, preferably closed toed, to benefit Soles 4 Souls, a national charity that has pledged to donate one million shoes to Haiti…Additionally, the SGA will host a 30-minute information session about Haiti tonight at 7:30 p.m., said Executive Vice President Meg McCrummen…

Gorgas continues with renovations

Within a couple of weeks, students can expect to see changes to the first floor of Gorgas Library. Since Dec. 14, the first floor has been undergoing remodeling for the sake of creating more space for students to comfortably study and research…

UA Relay for Life kicks off for 2010

…Relay for Life’s come-and-go event commenced this season’s challenge. The event was held in the Ferguson Center Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. “Last night was an opportunity for students to organize teams, gather information and pick up some free stuff,” said Kit Pearce, a senior majoring in communicative disorders and president of Colleges Against Cancer and Relay for Life chairwoman…The chief aim of the event is to raise money for the American Cancer Society, Pearce said, but the celebration and relay will be held April 24 at the UA Soccer Stadium. “It began as a relay and has now kind of turned into a party,” said Pearce. “It’s a fun event that promotes cancer awareness and raises money.”…

Former mobster speaks on evils of gambling, crime

Bozyk Art Exhibition and Musical Interpretation Tonight

Marta Bozyk, a graphic artist from Krakow, Poland, will hold an exhibition reception for her work tonight in the Ferguson Gallery from 6 p.m. to 8. Her work has been on display in the gallery since campus since Jan. 11 and will remain there until Friday…The reception tonight will not only feature Bozyk and her exquisite work, but UA student musicians to accompany her creations. Jeffrey Stiles, a bassoon player; Ryan Davis, on the trombone; Tota Silva, playing the flute; and Adrian Marmolejo on the bass will be performing the works in the gallery. This performance will be an improvisational music/art experience. The UA student musicians will look at her work for inspiration and play their instruments in correlation to what they see…
