Recycling grows rapidly

…the University of Alabama’s recycling initiative, which collected 885.8 tons of recyclables between 2008 and 2009, an increase of more than 86 percent over the 475 tons recycled in the previous year. That 885 tons diverted from the landfill saved the university $24,802 in landfill fees, said Johnson, UA’s director of logistics support services…

Professor helps church document its history

A University of Alabama professor is working with one of Tuscaloosa’s oldest churches to bring its role in the civil rights movement to light. Through the work of UA history professor John Giggie and undergraduate research assistant and history student Amber Baker, Hunter Chapel AME Zion’s 143-year history is being preserved and documented in a book for future generations…Baker started working with Hunter Chapel as part of a course on religion and civil rights. She and Giggie began working with 12 students to create a historical volume that combined church documents dating back to the mid-1800s and stories told by lifelong church members…Giggie’s class focused on the civil rights aspect of the church’s history. While Baker uncovered details of the church’s origins, Giggie’s students studied the church’s political involvement and the role that religion played in its members’ lives during the civil rights movement. “What we decided to do was to create a class related to civil rights. We looked at how faith and social justice came together and how religion was often a motivating factor during this time,” Giggie said…
