UA is launching a new student leadership initiative called Leadership UA. Modeled after Leadership Tuscaloosa and similar community-based organizations, Leadership UA will accept approximately 30 promising student leaders each year. Sophomores and juniors with interest in campus leadership are encouraged to apply. Applicants will be selected based on campus involvement, GPA and creative ideas for making improvements to the UA community with a team of their peers. Program components include monthly meetings with UA administrators throughout the spring semester, followed by a community-based project during the fall semester. Applications are available at http://leadership.ua.edu and are due to the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership by noon on Friday, Nov. 20. The National Weather Service in Birmingham will be on campus Nov. 17 to make two presentations. The first is a weather-safety class from 11:15 a.m. to noon. The second is a storm-spotter class from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Both classes will be held in the Ferguson Student Center Theater and are open to students, faculty and staff. Make your donation to Beat Auburn Beat Hunger today. Donations can be made online or at one of the Beat Auburn Beat Hunger collection sites through Nov. 19. Contact the Community Service Center for more information about collection sites and other ways to help. Also, persons who bring 10 canned goods or $5 to Alumni Hall or to the Student Alumni Association table at the Ferguson Student Center will receive a “Beat Auburn … Again” T-shirt while supplies last. The UA Chapter of the NAACP and Omega Psi Phi fraternity are now accepting monetary or unwrapped toy donations for their annual Christmas Toy Ball. The ball is a benefit that allows attendees to make donations and give toys to needy children in the city of Tuscaloosa and surrounding areas. Tickets go on sale Nov. 16. Tables will be in the Ferguson Student Center on Nov. 16-20 and Nov. 23-24 for ticket sales and toy drop off. More information: Amber Parker.

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
The Honors College announces the 2009 EBSCO Industries Scholarship Program for Honors College students. The scholarship awards range in value from $1,000 to $5,000 per year. The awards are offered for a maximum of eight semesters. To be eligible, a student must be a member in good standing in the Honors College. The criteria for selection are financial need, GPA, involvement, achievement, effort (such as employment) and a short essay. Application forms are available in Nott Hall and must be submitted to 289 Nott Hall by Dec. 1. Decisions will be sent to applicants by mid-January 2010. More information: Fran Oneal at 348-5554.

Information sessions for students considering moving off campus next year will be held Nov. 16 and Nov. 17. Students will learn what they need to know before signing a lease. Session will be held Nov. 16 at Burke Hall West at 6:30 p.m. and Tutwiler Hall at 8 p.m., and Nov. 17 at Rose Towers at 6:30 p.m. and Paty Hall at 8 p.m. Programs are open to all students living in any on-campus residence hall. Literacy is the Edge, a student-advocacy group for literacy at UA, is recruiting volunteers. LITE needs volunteers to tutor children and tutor adults and to serve as leaders in LITE. Denny Chimes will play patriotic music on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at noon and again at 4 p.m. in celebration of Veterans Day. “America the Beautiful” and “America (My Country, ‘Tis of Thee)” will be among the selections.
A segment of Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace for the Next Generation is being offered free to UA students on Nov. 11 and Nov. 18 at noon in 321 Lloyd Hall. The Student Health Center is offering the H1N1 FluMist vaccine at the clinic during normal hours of operation by either walk-in or appointment (call 348-2778). The H1N1 flu vaccine is offered at no cost to UA students. A Freedom in Creation special presentation and gallery of children’s artwork will be held Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. in 30 tenHoor. FIC is a program that helps war-affected children in northern Uganda become integrated into their community through care, counseling and recreation projects. The third annual Kings of the Court Basketball Tournament will be Nov. 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center. Registration is open until Nov. 16. Click here to register. The Canterbury Episcopal Student Forum will host a barbecue before the Alabama vs. UT-Chattanooga football game to raise money for the Deacon’s Deli, which provides groceries weekly to needy families in the Tuscaloosa area. The Alabama YMCA Collegiate Legislature will be March 4–6, 2010, in Montgomery, Ala. Collegiate Legislature is an annual conference where college students from universities across Alabama participate in a model legislative session in the state capitol. This is a great opportunity to be actively involved with debate about important state issues and have the chance to meet elected officials. Early registration is due Nov. 28.
