UA Community Service Center Names Director

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. Wahnee Sherman, a specialist in student services, has been named director of The University of Alabama Community Service Center.

“Community service is a way for every UA student to be engaged with the community and to make a difference,” Sherman says. “The CSC has been in existence for many years and has been doing great work. We will be working to expand the center’s scope and to engage more students as the University continues to grow,” she says.

As director, Sherman is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the CSC.  Sherman plans and implements campus wide community service initiatives, including the Week of Welcome service, Beat Auburn Beat Hunger Food Drive, Hunger and Homelessness Week and National Volunteer Week.

Sherman also coordinates the UA Alternative Break programs offering students domestic and international service trips. “This year, we will be offering six trips, including three international service trips and three domestic service trips,” she says. “For the first time, we’re planning to offer shorter trips in the state of Alabama so UA students can give back right here in our state. The Alternative Break program is a great way for students to give back and to get to know other UA students in meaningful ways.”

Sherman previously served as assistant vice president for student services at Mississippi University for Women before joining UA. Sherman holds a doctorate in higher education administration from UA and is also a graduate of Mississippi State University.

Through the CSC, UA students were able to contribute more than 425,000 hours of volunteer service last year.
