ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
Beginning with spring semester 2010 early registration, all students will be required to update or confirm address and phone information as well as emergency contact information. This is necessary to ensure that the University has accurate, up-to-date information in case a need should arise. When you first go to either the “Add or Drop Classes” form or the “Look up Classes” form under “Registration Tools” at mybama.ua.edu, you will be redirected to the forms, which need to be updated or confirmed. You will then click the “Continue to Registration” button to proceed.
EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
The Office of Information Technology is hosting a Cyber Security and Online Social Networking panel for students today at 6 p.m. in the Ferguson Theater. Attendees will have an opportunity to win a Dell Netbook and two mp3 players courtesy of Dell and Alabama Credit Union. More information: http://cybersafe.ua.edu.
Both seasonal flu vaccines (FluMist and flu shots) and the H1N1 FluMist will be available to all students at Tutwiler Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 6:30–8 p.m. The Student Health Center will begin offering the H1N1 nasal spray vaccine at the clinic during normal hours of operation by either walk-in or appointment (call 348-2778). The H1N1 flu vaccine will be offered at no cost to students. Seasonal flu shots cost $20 and seasonal FluMist is $30. All charges are applied to the student account with the University. The University will continue to receive shipments of the vaccine, including the H1N1 injection, which is expected to arrive in early November. H1N1 FluMist is appropriate for those who do not have chronic illnesses (e.g., asthma, diabetes) or are pregnant and are between the ages of 2 and 49. The H1N1 flu shots, when the vaccine arrives, are appropriate for all others over 6 months of age.
This week’s football game against Tennessee will kick off at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 at Bryant-Denny Stadium and will be televised on CBS. More information: http://uagameday.com.
Financial Peace for the Next Generation sessions offered this month. A segment of Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace for the Next Generation is being offered free to UA students on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. and Wednesdays at noon through Oct. 28 in 321 Lloyd Hall. Each week will be a different lesson with two opportunities to attend. Sessions include “Cash Flow Planning” (Oct. 20 and 21) and “Relating with Money” (Oct. 27 and 28). The UA Community Service Center will hold an informational meeting for students interested in the Alternative Spring Break service trip to Chicago and the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend service trip to Greensboro, Ala. The meeting will be Oct. 26, noon–1 p.m., in 309 Ferguson Student Center. The Greensboro trip focuses on maintenance of a historic site where King was hidden safely from the Ku Klux Klan prior to delivering a speech in the area. A “How to Pay for College” forum will be held on Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. The event is co-hosted by the SGA and Collegiate Politicians. The “History Behind Hair” will be Oct. 21 in the Marian Gallaway Theatre from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. Hear stories from those who were here in May 1970 for the Vietnam Antiwar Movement. The Student Government Association is dedicating Wednesday, Oct. 28, as the day when the entire SGA will wear pink. The SGA encourages all students, administrators, professors, faculty and staff to wear pink in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Women’s Resource Center is celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the third annual Breast Cancer Tree of Honor and Remembrance month-long display. Four Breast Cancer Awareness Trees of Honor and Remembrance have been set up across campus for the UA community to write messages on pink ornaments to remember those who have lost their lives to or survived breast cancer. In order to accommodate CBS television trucks, all parking on Colonial Drive must be cleared Friday, Oct. 23, by 5 a.m. Students who are designated as orange residential and park on Colonial must relocate to an alternate parking area. Traffic through this area will be restricted on Friday, so please avoid this road if at all possible.
Alternative parking is available on game-day weekends for students living in the Tutwiler Hall area. Some parking areas near Tutwiler Hall must be vacated by 5 p.m. Friday on game-day weekends. Alternative student parking is available in the following parking lots: Barnwell, Parham, Osband, Burke, Hayden-Harris, Farrah, the Aquatics Center and the lot at the corner of Bryant Drive and Hackberry Lane. Click here for a map of these areas. If all of these parking options are full, students should go to the Campus Drive Deck, which is free for students after 5 p.m. on Friday. From the Campus Drive Deck, Crimson Ride will take students back to Tutwiler. For later hours, the 348-RIDE express or 348-RIDE will provide service to Tutwiler.
Fans attending events on the Quad prior to each home football game are encouraged to drop off their game-day recyclables at a tent east of the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library. Plastic, aluminum and cardboard will be accepted at the tent, staffed by employees from UA’s logistics and support services department. UA employees and SGA volunteers will also hand out recycling bags to individual groups tailgating on the Quad so that cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic cups, food wrappers and other types of plastics, including ice bags, can be recycled.
This week is Alcohol Awareness Week. The Office of Student Judicial Affairs encourages UA students to visit the “Red Flags of Awareness” display on the Quad. The 1,700 red flags displayed represent the national number of college student deaths relating to alcohol misuse and abuse. The objective of the display is to promote awareness and provide a visual representation of the effects of alcohol abuse.

The HopeLine wireless-phone-recycling drive will be held through Oct. 31. During October, the Women’s Resource Center is participating in the HopeLine phone-recycling program that puts wireless phones and services to work to prevent domestic violence. Donating your old wireless phone to HopeLine gives survivors of domestic violence the chance to make a lifesaving call. Drop-off locations are the Women’s Resource Center on the third floor of Russell Hall, the women’s studies department at 104 Manly Hall, the dean of students office at 230 Ferguson Center, Tutwiler Hall and Rose Towers. Eligible undergraduates may apply to the McNair Scholars Program, a federally funded TRIO program that helps prepare students for doctoral study. Bama Dining is conducting a survey to better understand UA campus lifestyles and preferences. The University Supply Store wants to buy your old clickers. You may take your old clicker to the buy-back window at the Ferguson Student Center or Tutwiler Hall locations of the SUPe Store and get $10 in return. Any student who turns in an old EInstruction clicker is eligible to participate. The deadline is March 31, 2010.

FLU REMINDERS
If you have flu-like symptoms or think you may have been exposed to swine flu, please visit the Student Health Center (no appointment necessary). Like other flu viruses, H1N1 spreads from person to person through coughing, sneezing and sometimes through touching objects contaminated with the virus.
The Student Health Center provides the following reminders on basic prevention measures for any virus:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
- Clean and sterilize contaminated surfaces.

Those individuals who have had documented H1N1 (swine) flu, verified with a confirmation by the Alabama Department of Public Health Lab or other certified lab, are presumed to be immune and do not need the H1N1 vaccine.
