UA to hold pep rally, bonfire tonight

The University of Alabama will host its annual homecoming pep rally and bonfire on the Quad starting at 7 tonight. The homecoming step show presented by the National Pan-Hellenic Council will be at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Coleman Coliseum…The homecoming parade will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday…UA’s game kicks off against the University of South Carolina at 6:45 p.m. Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium…

…Chad Clark, director of student engagement in the Student Involvement and Leadership Office, said the University expects to at least match the 2008 parade attendance numbers of 7,000 to 8,000 spectators. The parade will have 75 to 85 groups participating this year.
The University is starting to see a lot more community involvement as well with the parade, Clark said. Both local businesses and some gubernatorial candidates have entered a float or are walking in the parade as well as non-Greek organizations…

Quarterback returns as Homecoming grand marshal

The last time Richard Todd stood mid-field in Bryant-Denny Stadium, he was Alabama’s All-American quarterback. But on Saturday, Todd will return instead as the 2009 Homecoming parade grand marshal…

Astronomy night viewing remains part of Homecoming

Dawn Williams, assistant professor in the department of physics and astronomy, and the UA astronomy program will host a public night sky viewing tonight on top of Gallalee Hall…Holding a night sky viewing session open to the public on Homecoming weekend has been a UA tradition for quite some time, said Bill Keel, an astronomy professor. These events are family and student friendly, as well as free of charge, he said. “This is my 23rd year [at UA], and they were already doing them when I arrived,” Keel said…Next weekend, UA astronomers have scheduled Galilean Nights as a part of this international celebration. Galilean Nights will occur over a three-day period to coincide with Galileo’s first use of a telescope to view the night sky…

UA is home to more members of USA Today’s All-USA Academic Team than any other school in the nation, Harvard and Yale included. We produce winners of prestige scholarships: Truman, Goldwater, and Hollings, among others… 

UA’s Alabama Nursing Hall of Fame inducts 6 in Tuscaloosa ceremony

Six health care workers — including one who served as president of every nursing organization in Alabama, the first African American to serve as nursing dean at a major public university in the state of Alabama, and a 4-decade nursing educator and rural healthcare advocate — were inducted tonight into the Alabama Nursing Hall of Fame by the University of Alabama College of Nursing. “The achievements and dedication of this year’s inductees have profoundly influenced the nursing profession and recipients of healthcare in the state of Alabama and nationally,” said Shelley Jordan, director of development at the UA Capstone College of Nursing. “We look forward to honoring them and the work they’ve done.” he inductees were honored during ceremonies at the NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa…

Cuban ceramic artist shares expertise at UA

…University of Alabama ceramics professor Lowell Baker…hosted Lloret, one of the foremost Cuban ceramicists, for 10 days to give his students a chance to learn from one of the field’s best artists as well as see the great work Cuban artists do in less than ideal circumstances. “The artwork that the Cuban ceramic artists are making is on a scale that I would not attempt,” Baker said. “They’re constructing 7- and 8-feet tall sculptures made up of smaller pieces baked in a kiln that is maybe 20 inches square.”…Baker said Lloret is the first Cuban visual artist to visit the campus. During his time at UA, Lloret gave a presentation Tuesday night on the history of Cuban ceramic art and also decorated a few of Baker’s pieces and molded some of his own works, which will stay on the UA campus… 

Witt took cues from her dad

Anne Cleino Witt credits all of her music students for enriching her life, but there is one who particularly stands out. That is 92-year-old aspiring cellist and Witt’s father, Edward Cleino. A well-known Alabama music educator who hosted the television show “Music Time” on Alabama Education Television from the late 1950s to the early 1970s, Cleino is the reason Witt pursued a career in the field, but he is now taking lessons from Witt…That forward momentum carried the UA graduate away from her hometown of Tuscaloosa for more than 20 years. But now she can be found building more momentum everywhere there is strings music…she took a position teaching music education in the School of Music. Witt also is the coordinator of the Tuscaloosa City Strings in Schools program, the president of the String Quartet Society of Tuscaloosa and offers adult strings lessons for beginning to advanced students. Her father is in the beginner class…

Report shows 4,450 Ala. jobs created by stimulus

…A University of Alabama economist said the stimulus funds may eventually create 50,000 jobs directly or indirectly. The director of the University of Alabama Center for Business and Economic Research, Sam Addy, said the report shows stimulus money is helping improve Alabama’s economy. “It shows it’s going to do what it’s supposed to do,” Addy said. Addy said the report doesn’t show the secondary effects of the stimulus money, such as the private companies that have been able to add jobs because of the positive effects the stimulus spending has had on the economy. Addy said he believes that eventually more than 50,000 jobs will be created directly and indirectly as a result of the stimulus funds…

Local chef utilized fresh produce

Executive Chef David Dickensauge has made an impact on the University Club in just a few short months through his emphasis on using local, fresh produce…General manager of the University Club Lori McCool said she supports the work that Dickensauge has done to improve the menu and the general quality of the food served. “We’re trying to change the mentality of the people who come to eat here,” McCool said. “It is no comparison. You can’t go into any restaurant and get what he’s putting out.”…

Starting a business in Alabama?

The University of Alabama business school has set up what it calls “The Alabama Entrepreneurial Research Network.” The program targets rural areas of the state with high unemployment. The idea is to provide “know how” to start a business… 

SGA plans hot air balloon rides, concerts to raise money

The SGA will host a series of events Nov. 4 through Nov. 6 to raise money for a new set of need- and merit-based scholarships…They range from a concert on Wednesday night at the Bama Theatre featuring the Tim Reynolds Band with post and pre-parties at the Brick House to a Taste of Tuscaloosa and hot air balloon rides on the Quad on Thursday to a late night snack of Chik-fil-A on Friday, according to the resolution…
