…Pomping is a weeklong process that student organizations go through to make festive lawn decorations each year during Homecoming week…“Groups use the theme each year to make a big production,” said Mary Cypress Howell, executive director of Homecoming…“This year, the theme is ‘A Return to Glory,’” Howell said. “The theme was chosen because other than just focusing on football glory, it also focuses on returning to the glory days of college. It relates to the alumni coming back to appreciate the college life and the traditions that college life holds.

The Anderson Society has sold several hundred T-shirts so far for Homecoming 2009, and they hope to sell more. The Anderson Society, an honor society for students who have made tremendous contributions to the University, has kept the annual tradition of selling Homecoming T-shirts to the UA community…
Alabama Business Hall of Fame to induct four leaders

Four Alabama businessmen will be inducted into the Alabama Business Hall of Fame in Tuscaloosa on Thursday. This year’s induction marks the 40th anniversary of the Hall of Fame at the University of Alabama, which features more than 120 prominent business leaders from across the state, said a news release. The 2009 inductees include Mike Jenkins IV, CEO and chairman of Jenkins Brick Co., the late Thomas E. Jernigan, former CEO and chairman of Marathon Corp.; Carl E. Jones, former chairman of Regions Financial Corp.; and John Russell Thomas, CEO, chairman and president of Aliant Financial Corp. “These are unique individuals and each displayed confidence in their ability to succeed and each had a vision and a strong sense of civic responsibility,” said Will Brooke, chairman of the Culverhouse College of Commerce Board of Visitors, which sponsors the Hall of Fame. “The state and the nation are better because of their contributions.”

American studies professor to speak tonight

Alicia Schmidt Camacho, the Sarai Ribicoff associate professor of American studies at Yale University, will give the Rose Gladney Lecture for Justice and Social Change tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Room 205 of Gorgas Library…Lynn Adrian, chair of the UA American studies department, said the lecture this year would be different from the past four years. Adrian said the past lectures commemorated specific anniversaries of the 1960s Civil Rights movement and were held in the spring. In contrast, Adrian said the lecture this year will focus on current issues…
Dow tops 10,000; some investors still wary

…Robert Brooks, a finance professor at the University of Alabama, said stock market milestones, such as Wednesday’s Dow Jones of more than 10,000, are largely insignificant to serious investors. He said that reading too much into them can also pose danger to the less-sophisticated investor. While he said people are quick to point out the huge jump the Dow Jones market has made in just seven months, people also need to remember where it was before the jump. “People like to make note of that, but it is up 50 percent from the bottom,” he said of the five-figure milestone…
