Support the Crimson Tide as the team faces the Virginia Tech Hokies. Join the ESPN crew of Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard in Atlanta, Ga., Saturday, Sept. 5, at Centennial Olympic Park for the live “Sportscenter” broadcast at 9 a.m. to be followed by “College Gameday” live at 10 a.m. Let’s make this the largest crowd ever.

An upgrade from Banner 7 to Banner 8 is scheduled for Labor Day weekend. The Office of Information Technology will conduct the scheduled downtime from 5 p.m. on Sept. 4 until 5 p.m. on Sept. 7. While myBama will be available, the channels within myBama that access Banner will not. For most users, these channels include self-service and administrative systems. Campuswide e-mail and Web services will not be affected. While some user areas will receive new features once the upgrade is complete, no changes will occur to the general user interface or navigation. The UA Police Department will have continuous access to Banner information during the scheduled downtime in case you have an emergency. Please contact the HelpDesk at help.desk@ua.edu or 348-HELP if additional emergency access is needed during the downtime or for additional questions or concerns.

STUDENT AFFAIRS

The Public Relations Student Society of America will hold its first meeting Sept. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in 216 Reese Phifer. Cathy Andreen, UA director of media relations, and Susan Page, assistant director of UA communications for advancement, will be guest speakers. Students who need a ride to the Birmingham airport during University break periods can make reservations at the Housing and Residential Communities office in Mary Burke Hall. Reservations must be made in person. The schedule of departure and pickup times can be found on the HRC Web site by clicking on Airport Shuttle under On-Campus Housing. Cost is $30 one-way or $60 round-trip. More information: HRC at 348-6676.

Sustained Dialogue is accepting participant applications for the 2009–10 academic year. Sustained Dialogue, an organization that brings together students from different backgrounds, is an initiative of the Crossroads Community Center. If you have a 3.0 GPA and 12 semester hours, consider joining the Phi Sigma Pi co-ed honor fraternity. An informational meeting will be held Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. in 309 Ferguson Center. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Provost Judy Bonner and Vice Provost Mark Nelson invite faculty, staff and students to bring their lunches and join them for open-ended discussions to get a “pulse check” of the University environment. The informal meetings will be held in 204-A Ferguson Student Center at noon on Sept. 3, Oct. 1 and Nov. 13.

EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

A display of 150 American flags honoring American heroes will line the sidewalk from Denny Chimes to Gorgas Library Sept. 7-11, thanks to the efforts of a group of students. A ceremony is planned for 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10 on the steps of Gorgas Library. Speakers will include UA President Robert Witt, Tuscaloosa Fire Chief Alan Martin and others. Taking Back Sunday will perform on Sept. 18 for the fall concert presented by the Division of Student Affairs and the University Union. The concert begins at 8 p.m. at Coleman Coliseum. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale exclusively at http://crimsonartstickets.com. Student tickets are $15. Floor seats and general admission tickets are $30. Free parking for the concert will be available at the UA Soccer Complex with shuttles provided by Crimson Ride. More information: Maeci Martin at 348-7487.
