Bama Dining to offer new and improved dining experiences

…several developments currently underway from Bama Dining, including the newly remodeled and reopened Buffalo Phil’s at Burke Hall…a new restaurant later this fall called Maea, located on the top floor of Lakeside Diner…Other new additions for the fall semester will include P.O.D, a convenient store located in Shelby Hall, as well as a Subway located directly between Bidgood and Alston Halls. However, Lloyd Hall will receive the most dining options, such as Boar’s Head Brand, Java City, Chick-fil-A and Pizza Hut. All restaurants in Lloyd Hall will open in January 2010…To make the ordering process simpler and more convenient for students, a new pilot program has been introduced, allowing students to purchase items online at Julia’s Market located in Tutwiler…The commuter 50/90 meal plan will allow students living off campus to purchase a block of 50 meals a semester, which averages out to one or two meals per week, according to Mackey. Students who eat on campus three or more times per week can purchase a block of 90 meals a semester. “We have been working with commuters to develop plans that fit their lifestyles, and we certainly look forward to continuing that process throughout the semester,” Mackey said…

Students study abroad this summer

Sororities see positive results in recruitment

Over 1,400 girls rushed for the Fall 2009 pledge class, according to a report by WVUA, and there were 1,200 pledges at the end of the week, according to a UA News release. Catherine Emens, a senior majoring in Spanish and English and the director of judicial affairs on the Panhellenic Council, said the week was a great success. All of the sororities made quota for the number of potential new members they wanted to accept, and 83 percent of the girls decided to pledge. The majority of the other 17 percent voluntarily dropped out of recruitment and only a small percentage were released, Emens said…Some notable occurrences at fall recruitment included the Gamma Phi Beta sorority getting the largest pledge class in the nation and the Alpha Phi sorority participating in its first recruitment since the sorority was established on the UA campus last year…

Students get into action, improve schools

While other students relaxed during the last week of summer, a group of UA students returned to Tuscaloosa one week early to take part in a week full of community service through the ninth annual Alabama Action on Aug. 9 through14. Alabama Action, a program that combines service at underprivileged schools and academics, is offered through the Honors College…A record number of students, including 115 Honors College freshmen, 12 Coca-Cola scholars, 25 student leaders and two student co-directors, participated…

More than 1,000 sign up for city’s national triathlon: 5 competitors are from Tuscaloosa

More than a thousand triathletes from around the world are coming to Tuscaloosa to compete in the USA Triathlon Age Group and Elite National Championships on Saturday. But five of the competitors did not have to make travel plans. They live in Tuscaloosa…Alex Woodard, a UA student from Columbus, Miss., is one of the top triathletes in the Southeast, according to Kendrick Gibson, founder of Alabama Triathletes, a sport club at UA. He will compete in the 20-24 age group…Jon Gilbert…was recently named the associate athletics director for external operations at UA. Katie Gilbert is the director for International Services at UA’s Capstone International Center. The two are training for Saturday’s triathlon in the 40-44 age group…

Giving fans an earful

…But college-football enthusiasts are expected to be an even better market for Live Sports Radio, which is expanding this year to clusters of teams in major conferences, including the Big 10, Big 12, Pac 10 and Southeastern, after successful tests last year at Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma State and Penn State…More than 11,000 University of Alabama fans bought the earpieces last year, including many in the contingent of about 10,000 who usually travel to the team’s away games, said Tom Brooks, an executive of Crimson Tide Sports Marketing. “It’s becoming another part of fans’ game-day attire,” said Mr. Brooks, whose outfit broadcasts the games as called by the venerable Eli Gold…

To Kill a Cultural Mockingbird with a tweet

…Three years ago, Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, talked to the New York Times about an annual essay contest for high school students, centered around her novel, and sponsored by the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. “(The students) always see new things in it and the way they relate it to their lives now is really quite incredible,” she said…
