Wedding planning, chick flicks, death among the 100 short-term classes offered at the University of Alabama

Students at the University of Alabama this week began studying chick flicks, death and wedding planning as the school rolled out its spring slate of interim classes. More than 1,500 students are enrolled in the more than 100 short-term classes intended to offer instruction and real-life experience in fields to which most students would not normally be exposed. The classes typically run from May 11-29, and are designed by faculty, whose course plan must win the approval of the administration…Mark Nelson, UA vice provost for academic affairs and vice president for student affairs, said new offerings this year at UA include a class called “Blind Preachers and Dead Mules: Southern Gothic in Film, Fiction and Song,” and one called “Women in Popular Music: From Doo Wop Girls to Riot Grrrls.”…” It gives the professors an opportunity to go down a path they would not get to go down during the regular courses,” Nelson said. “It’s always been very popular.”…

The exposition titled “Side by Side” is open for viewing through June 17 at the Julio Larramendi Gallery in Old Havana…Chip Cooper, took the time to answer a few questions for Havana Times…At the University of Alabama we have what is called “the Cuba initiative” started in 2001 by Bob Olin the Dean of Arts and Sciences.
