World Voice Day Talks the Talk About Vocal Health at UA Event

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – World Voice Day, a chance for members of The University of Alabama community to learn more about vocal health, will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16, in UA’s Ferguson Center, rooms 300 and 360.

The event is free; food will be provided, and door prizes will be offered. The event is sponsored by UA’s department of communicative disorders and Alabama ENT in Birmingham.

The event will feature formal presentations, displays and handouts. Presentations will include an ear, nose and throat doctor discussing medical issues surrounding the voice. In addition, health issues involving using the voice professionally, particularly in singing and in the business world, will be on tap.

Displays and handouts will show different aspects of vocal health as well as equipment use in treating vocal-health problems. Anyone interested in the human voice, and especially those whose profession relies heavily on the use of their voice, such as singers, pastors, salespeople and teachers, are encouraged to attend.

World Voice Day is part of a national program sponsored by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Its Web site can be found at http://www.entnet.org/HealthInformation/worldVoiceDay.cfm.

The department of communicative disorders is part of the College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships on the USA Today Academic All-American Teams.
