Reception honors USA Today academic standouts

Five University students were honored as members of the USA Today All-USA College Academic Team in a ceremony held Wednesday in the Moody Art Gallery.  Provost Judy Bonner and Jacqueline Morgan, associate dean of the Honors College, were on hand to honor the accomplished students. The winners were Laura Dover, a junior majoring in philosophy and Spanish; Ynhi Thai, a junior majoring in chemical and biological engineering; Adam Knight, a senior majoring in biology; Laura Godorecci, a senior majoring in interdisciplinary studies and classics, and Alex Flachsbart, a senior majoring in political science and economics…

Students promote sustainable living

…Students for Sustainability was cofounded last fall by students Nicole Ortega and Beth Hataway after discussing how beneficial an organic sustainable garden on campus could be to the University…In Jan. 2009, members of the group were finally able to put their ideas into action after receiving permission from the UA Arboretum staff to plant a garden on their land, she said…Once the plants begin to cultivate, members want to sell the produce at the On Campus Farmers Market and cook a dinner at the garden for all of the faculty members involved in the project. In addition, members want to donate some of the produce to homeless shelters, she said…

UA yearbook to publish in different form next year

…Earlier this month, the media planning board, which oversees student publications, voted 5-4 to continue printing the Corolla, and then voted to print it with a soft cover. “It’s too much of a tradition on this campus to drop right now,” said professor Bill Keller, who, as chair of the board, cast the vote to break the tie. “If we stopped the Corolla, somebody would start another one.” The media planning board had considered folding the book for good earlier this year, and last fall even President Robert Witt expressed doubts about its future. The board’s vote is only a recommendation made to UA administrators, but Paul Wright, director of student media, said the yearbook is moving forward and selected an editor for the 2010 edition…

Birmingham News – April 30

Lisa Plowman Dolensky, a prekindergarten teacher at Christ the King in Riverchase, has been selected to participate in an invitational summer institute for teachers, The Longleaf Writing Project Fellowship, at the University of Alabama School of Education. Her creative nonfiction will appear in Simon & Schuster’s Howard Books 2009 release “God Sightings” and the “Chicken Soup For The Soul” book series.
