STUDENT AFFAIRS

SGA elections began Tuesday, March 3 and will close at midnight Wednesday, March 4. Computer stations are located at the following residence hall desks during voting: Bryant, Burke Commons, Harris, Lakeside East, Paty, Ridgecrest East, Riverside Community Center, Rose Towers and Tutwiler. For a list of open and restricted computer labs on campus, please click http://pclabs.ua.edu. To vote online, login to http://myBama.ua.edu; click on the “Vote” image; vote for executive offices, senator according to your college enrollment and the SGA referendum. After you vote, a generic receipt will be sent to your BamaMail account. The receipt will not indicate for whom you voted, it will only verify that your vote was counted. For voting questions on March 3-4 please call 348-7487 from 7 a.m.–9 p.m. After 9 p.m., please send an e-mail to sgaelections@sa.ua.edu.

Crimson Ride buses will run until 6 p.m. Friday, March 13 and will not operate during the week of spring break. Crimson Ride bus service will resume on Monday, March 23 at 7 a.m. Also, 348-RIDE will operate until 7 a.m. Friday, March 13 and will not operate during spring break. 348-RIDE will resume limited service on Sunday, March 22 at 10 a.m. and will resume normal hours of operation on Sunday, March 22 at 10 p.m.

The Creative Campus Initiative is accepting applications for its 2009-2010 Intern Class. Creative Campus seeks interns representative of all 13 UA colleges and schools and is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Interns are hired to serve UA and our community by developing innovative ways of approaching art, education, economy and leadership through collaborative student-driven project development and implementation. EVENTS, ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

The first Graduate History Conference on Power and Struggle will be March 6-7 in the AIME Building. Keynote speaker Dr. Matthew Connelly of Columbia University will give a talk at 6:30 p.m. followed by a reception. All students are invited to attend and hear new scholarship by graduate students from across the nation. Sponsor: Graduate History Association of the department of history. State Treasurer Kay Ivey will be speaking March 3 at 6 p.m. in Bibb Graves Auditorium. The Alpha Rho Chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity has named Ivey the inaugural recipient of the Excellency in Business and Public Service Award. More information: Ryan Sprinkle.

The premier screening of “The Hero Next Door” will be March 3 at 5 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. The Creative Campus Initiative and Honors College are sponsoring the event. “The Hero Next Door” trains young people to make a movie about someone in their community who has made a difference through an act of courage or kindness. Bargains for Babies will be March 7 from 7 a.m.–1:30 p.m. at the Ferguson Center Plaza. This campus yard sale will raise funds for the March of Dimes, Stork’s Nest Program and UA student organizations. All students are encouraged to participate. More information: Evelyn Dempsey.

Higher Education Day will be held Thursday, March 5 in Montgomery. The rally begins at 10:45 a.m. on the steps at the west side of the Alabama State House. Immediately following the rally a free lunch will be provided for legislators and attendees. More information: 334/832-9911.

Red Cross blood drive. Students from the Business Honors Program have worked with the American Red Cross to plan blood drives on campus on March 6. More information: www.givelife.org.

Capstone International Center invites faculty, staff and students to Capstone International Coffee Hour, Friday, March 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 121 B.B. Comer Hall. Sponsor: Graduate School.

The University Supply Store will hold its Graduation Celebration Tuesday-Thursday, March 24-26 in the Ferguson Center Ballroom from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. each day. Graduating students may place orders for class rings, graduation announcements, regalia and diploma frames and have cap and gown portraits taken. Representatives from various campus offices will be available to provide assistance. Class rings may be ordered Friday, March 27 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Refreshments, including lunch, will be served at the event and a number of door prizes will be awarded. Dinner and Sculpture Demonstration. Honors College and Housing and Residential Communities will host a dinner and sculpture demonstration featuring artist Charlie Lucas, also known as the “Tin Man,” Tuesday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the Grand Gallery at Smith Hall. The UA Libraries is sponsoring a Book Collecting Contest for UA students. The contest will showcase the interests and changing book-collecting habits of students in the 21st century. Contest entry forms and rules can be picked up at Gorgas, Bruno, Rodgers, McLure or Hoole libraries or downloaded from the UA Libraries Web site at www.lib.ua.edu/mystuff. Hanga: Two Hundred Years of Japanese Woodblock Prints will be featured in the Ferguson Center Art Gallery March 5-27. The opening reception will be Thursday, March 5 at 6 p.m. The exhibit is sponsored by the art department, Ferguson Center and the Capstone International Center Japan Program as a part of the annual Sakura Festival.

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

The Career Center is accepting applications for the 2009-2010 Peer Advisors. This leadership program is designed to educate and train undergraduate students on career-related topics so they can provide assistance to their peers. The deadline to apply is March 11.
