LUNAFEST Touring Film Festival to be Hosted by UA for Women’s History Month

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center is presenting LUNAFEST, a national touring festival of films focusing on women, as part of Women’s History Month on Tuesday, March 31 at 6:30 p.m. in the Bama Theatre in downtown Tuscaloosa.

The festival provides a national platform for emerging women filmmakers to share their stories on what it’s like to be a woman in the 21st century.

LUNAFEST includes 10 films selected from more than 200 submissions that made their way through a multi-stage judging process. Final selection followed a review by a panel of nine women professionals in the fields of film, media, marketing and women’s advocacy.

The films shown at LUNAFEST embody a wide range of topics dealing with women’s issues and some of the previous films have focused on these topics:

• Playfully competing with mom’s new boyfriend, 9-year-old Josephine learns that letting people in can lead to wonderful things.

  • A country house. A weekend. A family. Time goes by. Silence prevails.
  • Ladies are making their way into one of the world’s oldest sports – and even taking on the guys.
  • A playful animation about awkward moments and young romance.
  • Elena Bautista reflects on her 100 years of life.

At 6:30 p.m. a special silent auction fundraiser and reception will precede the film viewing. Local bakeries will provide desserts at the reception and the film viewing will begin at 7 p.m. Winners of the silent auction will be announced during intermission.

The event is being held as a benefit for the UA Women’s Resource Center, which provides free, confidential counseling and advocacy for victims of sexual assault, domestic/dating violence and stalking. Proceeds will also benefit the Breast Cancer Fund and the Leading Edge Institute.

Price of admission is $12 for students, $18 for UA faculty/staff and $22 for the general public. Tickets are available at the door.

LUNAFEST is produced by LUNA, the whole nutrition bar for women, which is a product line of the Clif Bar & Co. Local sponsors of LUNAFEST include the UA Women’s Resource Center, the department of women’s studies, Freshman Forum, the Leading Edge Institute, Chi Omega, Alpha Chi Omega, Zeta Tau Alpha, Housing and Residential Communities and UA Graduate Student Services.
