Choice Magazine Selects Books by UA Authors as Outstanding Academic Titles for 2008

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Choice magazine named two books written by University of Alabama faculty members to its list of Outstanding Academic Titles for 2008.

“Little Rock on Trial: Cooper v. Aaron and School Desegregation,” written by Dr. Tony Freyer, research professor of history and law at UA, and “The Road to Galaxy Formation,” written by Dr. William Keel, professor of astronomy at UA, are among the books selected.

Published in the January 2009 online and print issues of the magazine, the prestigious list reflects the best in scholarly titles reviewed by the magazine during the previous year. According to the magazine’s Web site, only 10 percent of the approximate 7,000 works reviewed by Choice each year receive the Outstanding Academic Title designation.

Freyer’s book, published by University Press of Kansas, was reviewed in May 2008 and Keel’s book, published by Springer-Praxis, was reviewed in April 2008.

“Little Rock on Trial” deals with the legal history of the school desegregation crisis in Little Rock, Ark., while “The Road to Galaxy Formation” deals with the start of the universe, including the growth of black holes at the centers of galaxies.

Choice reaches most undergraduate college and university libraries in the United States, with more than 35,000 librarians, faculty and others relying on it for collection development and scholarly research, according to the magazine’s Web site.
