University of Alabama archaeology students are learning about Indians in Cuba at the time of Columbus

Work by University of Alabama students at an archaeological dig in Cuba is shedding new light on the island’s Indian inhabitants at the time it was visited by Christopher Columbus. Two years of digging in the ancient Cuban village of El Chorro de Maita has turned up artifacts from shortly after the time the explorer first visited the island, Jim Knight, a UA anthropology professor, said Tuesday…The project is being financed by the National Geographic Society and co-led by UA and Cuba’s state science ministry. Also participating are students from Syracuse University and Penn State University, and professional archaeologists from Cuba and the United States…
Saban named national coach of the year

The University of Alabama’s Nick Saban will be presented the Home Depot Coach of the Year Award as part of ESPN’s College Football Awards show Thursday night…Earlier Tuesday, Saban was named one of 10 finalists for the Football Bowl Subdivision Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award…Each Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year finalist will have an opportunity to receive recognition in the permanent College Football Hall of Fame display in South Bend, Ind., $50,000 to support personal civic and charitable activities, and a $20,000 scholarship donation for his alumni association. The winner will be announced at halftime of the Music City Bowl on Dec. 31.
