TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center will hold a Harbor training session on Wednesday, Nov. 12 from 1:30-3 p.m. at the Ferguson Forum.
The WRC has seen great success with its Harbor program, a free training program to educate faculty and staff on how to best respond to victims of interpersonal violence (sexual assault, dating violence and stalking). Started during spring 2005, Harbor now has more than 275 participants and remains available for new trainees.
The purpose of Harbor is to create a network of safe places across campus where victims of sexual assault and domestic violence can go to receive assistance. Participants receive a certificate of completion and then display the Harbor placard on their office doors, helping to create a network of “safe harbors” across campus for students, faculty and staff who are survivors of violence.
“Harbor placards can now be seen all over campus,” said Sharmeka Lewis, WRC program coordinator. “It is so hard for victims to come forward. This is a way to encourage them to do so while equipping the community to feel prepared to respond effectively.”
