ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Applications are now available for the 2009 Premier Awards. The applications can be found at www.premierawards.ua.edu. Juniors and seniors, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, are eligible to apply. Faculty and staff members also may be nominated for select awards. The application deadline is Jan. 14, 2009. Please encourage eligible candidates who demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, service, integrity and community to apply for these awards. The Great American Smokeout will be Nov. 20. If you’ve been thinking about giving up smoking, now is the time. Don’t smoke? Then be a friend you’d want to have and encourage your friends to kick the habit.

Crimson Cooking, a healthy cookbook just for students, is now available. More than 80 recipes were submitted by UA students. The cookbooks will be sold every Thursday at the Ferguson Center from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Cookbooks are $7 and you can pay with your ACT card. More information: nutrition@ua.edu.

Miss University of Alabama deadline approaching. Information packets are available in Alumni Hall. To participate, students must turn in information packets to Alumni Hall by 3 p.m. on Nov. 26. Each participant must be a woman between the ages of 17 and 24, never married and have a minimum GPA of 2.5. The pageant will be Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. in Morgan Hall. More information: Carol Wright.

Beat Auburn Beat Hunger will end Thursday, Nov. 20. All food collected in Beat Auburn Beat Hunger, sponsored at UA through the Community Service Center, will be donated to the West Alabama Food Bank. The Community Service Center is raffling off a new, fourth-generation iPod Nano to faculty and students who donate canned food during the last week of BABH. Off-campus student survey. Do you currently live off-campus? If so, Housing and Residential Communities invites you to complete this survey to assist in enhancing your off-campus living experience.

The online housing application for fall 2009 is now available. Students living on campus who want to return to campus housing next fall must recontract before Feb. 1. Students who will leave in the spring for a co-op, internship or study abroad experience and want to return to campus housing must recontract in person with Housing and Residential Communities before they leave in December. UA Outdoor Recreation is offering two snow skiing trips in December. The trip to Steamboat Springs, Colo., will be Dec. 13–21 and will cost $775. The trip to Crested Butte, Colo., will be from Dec. 27–Jan. 3 and will cost $850 for students and $950 for non-students. Both costs include transportation, lodging, ski rentals and lift tickets. If you are interested in going on either of these trips, visit the UAOR office in the Student Recreation Center to sign up as soon as possible. More information: UAOR office at 348-7045.

Get on board the Entertainment Bus Route. Crimson Ride buses will service the downtown area Thursday and Saturday nights from 10 p.m.–3 a.m. and Fridays from 10 p.m.–4 a.m. Cost is $2 (Bama Cash only) one way. UA students are allowed to bring up to two guests for whom they are responsible. Alcohol is not allowed on the bus.

Donate your unused football tickets and win prizes! Those who donate will have a chance to win one of these great prizes: A-Day tickets in the Zone, a football autographed by Coach Nick Saban and UA bowl game tickets. If you are not going to the game, please do not let your ticket go to waste. Let your fellow students share the tradition.

Landlords, Leases and Legalities will be Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m. in Morgan Auditorium. If you’re planning to live off-campus, come learn everything you need to know before signing a lease, talking to a landlord or renting property. More information: Meg McCrummen.

The Minority Association of Pre-Health Students presents “The Life of a Medical Student” Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. in 310 Ferguson Center. The event will feature a panel of medical students, residents and practicing physicians who will be describing their experiences while pursuing medical careers. Capstone International celebrates 5th Annual Open House. As part of International Education Week, the Capstone International Center will host its 5th Annual Open House Coffee Hour Friday, Nov. 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 105 B.B. Comer Hall. Capstone International Center invites all faculty, staff and students to attend.

Crimson Ceramics Society to hold sale. Crimson Ceramics Society students and faculty will sell their work Monday, Dec. 1 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. across from Starbucks in Ferguson Center. This is an opportunity to get handmade Christmas presents, both large and small, that were made by UA students. Crimson Ceramics Society is a student organization in the department of art and art history.
