TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive, sponsored by the Community Service Center at The University of Alabama, will officially begin Monday, Oct. 20 with a kickoff event on the Ferguson Center Plaza from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
The food drive is a competition UA holds with Auburn University in an effort to donate as much food as possible to the East and West Alabama Food Banks. Contributions have helped feed many needy families across the state.
UA won last year’s competition by donating 241,336 pounds of food to the West Alabama Food Bank to beat Auburn’s 183,017 pounds of food donated to the East Alabama Food Bank.
This year’s kickoff event at UA will include a chili cooking competition with students and faculty invited to sample the competing recipes entered by local businesses. Attendees will vote on the winner.
Stephen Black, director of the UA Center for Ethics & Social Responsibility, will also be speaking at the event and there will be live entertainment including a step show and deejay.
“Last year’s kickoff was great, but I hope that this year’s will be an even better start to another successful year of beating Auburn and beating hunger,” said Regina Pena, one of the BABH student coordinators.
Cash and Bama Cash donations for BABH will be collected at the kickoff event.
All student organizations are encouraged to participate in BABH and attend the kickoff. The student organization that has the most members present at the kickoff will get all the money raised at the event donated to BABH in the organization’s name.
