TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Incoming students at The University of Alabama will be celebrating the start of their college careers in the 2008 Capstone Convocation – a solemn and inspiring occasion – Tuesday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. in Coleman Coliseum.
“This event is designed to inspire new students and give them a sense of what is possible as they begin their endeavors at the Capstone,” says Dr. Hank Lazer, UA associate provost for academic affairs, who will moderate the event.
UA President Robert E. Witt, UA Student Government Association President Cason Kirby and UA student leaders from various organizations will make brief remarks and will join with all participants in reciting the Capstone Creed, a key part of the event.
Also presenting or performing at the event will be the UA Brass Quintet; UA junior Derryck “D-Sharp” Gleaton, a hip-hop violinist who has performed at the Apollo Theater; Kendra Key, a UA student leader active in community and environmental causes; and a special performance by the cast of this summer’s hit theater production “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown!”
All new UA students are asked to attend. Students are encouraged to take the Crimson Ride buses to and from Coleman Coliseum. Extra buses will be provided and begin special routes from residence halls to the coliseum at 6 p.m.
A dessert reception will immediately follow the convocation. All new students will receive a special Class of 2012 tassel, coin and flash drive.
The event is open to all new students as well as returning faculty and staff. This is the sixth year the convocation has been held.
Classes begin at UA Wednesday, Aug. 20.
