Opinion: UA’s latest ranking an achievement
Tuscaloosa News – Aug. 25
Growth does not have to come at the expense of quality. That’s the message in the news that a growing University of Alabama has made its best showing ever in U.S. News & World Report’s annual college rankings, released last week. The magazine ranked UA 83rd among all public and private research universities, three places better than its previous high in 2004. When only public schools were considered, UA ranked 37th, two rungs above its 2004 position. The academic gains come in the midst of President Robert Witt’s plan to increase student enrollment from about 18,000 in 2003 to 28,000 in 2010, an effort coupled with employee hires and aggressive campus construction. The fact that it comes also in the midst of an economic slowdown makes the improvement even more remarkable…

Davis won’t take post with Obama
Montgomery Advertiser – Aug. 24
…Oba¬ma is not likely to carry Alabama, a Republican dominated state, said David Lanoue, a University of Alabama political science professor. Davis, who is more moderate than Obama, will study the Alabama vote in November to decide whether to run for governor and how he could win a statewide election in 2010, Lanoue said. An Obama administration also could showcase Davis in the next Congress as well as campaign for him in Alabama in 2010, he said. “A President Obama would be indebted in some small way to Congressman Davis,” because of his early support in Alabama, Lanoue said…
Conquering sexual addiction
Tuscaloosa News – Aug. 23
…Dr. Lee Keyes, executive director of the Counseling Center at the University of Alabama and a licensed psychologist, said that medically, sexual addiction is not a diagnosis, but he believes the addiction is real. “In the recognized diagnostic books we use, a sexual addiction would be a diagnosis such as nymphomania, or pedophilia, fetishism, sexual masochism, voyeurism, exhibitionism,” Keyes said. “I do personally feel that this is a real problem though.”…Keyes said the problem is growing, especially because sexual content is so widely available. “The issue there is that there’s so much of it and it’s so readily available and free,” he said. “In the past, when it was not really available, these things were not nearly as tempting or problematic, but now it’s widely available to anyone. If alcohol was as widely available and free to people, I think we’d see more people with alcohol addictions.”…
