University of Alabama astronomer awarded Hubble time

A Dutch teacher and amateur astronomer has discovered an object that is landing a University of Alabama astronomer some time next year on the Hubble Space Telescope.
The Dutch physics teacher, Hanny van Arkel, is one of thousands in a Web-based site called Galaxy Zoo….Van Arkel saw a strange sight and posted a finding that eventually became “Hanny’s Voorwerp,” which is Dutch for object. Bill Keel of UA and others have speculated the cloud, which he said would probably appear as green to our eyes, might be affected by the galaxy next door with a dying quasar and black hole….The story of the voorwerp and some of Keel’s analysis attracted coverage from The Economist magazine last month. Some clarity on the object is expected in the spring of 2009, when Hubble will train its telescope, cameras and spectrograph on the object….

…The cemetery, known as “Black Cemetery” in historical records, was more than 100 years old, a state historical official said. An archaeology team from the University of Alabama, which was hired to do the relocation, recently finished reburying the last of the remains removed from 163 graves found there. They now rest less than a mile away behind a building shared by the Galilee Missionary Baptist and Mt. Pleasant AME churches. Only five of the gravesites had identifying markers, according to Stephen Jones, an archaeologist who handled the relocation project. The rest were unidentified, Jones said…

The University of Alabama football team had five players named to the 2008 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll announced Tuesday. Rolando McClain, Josh Chapman, Nick Fanuzzi, Jennings Hester and Alfred McCullough were all selected to the team.
