TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Some 60 youth from across the United States, Canada and France will be attending the 2008 Alabama Boys and Girls Wheelchair Basketball Camps from June 18-23, hosted by The University of Alabama Disability Sports program.
The camps’ curriculum has a strong emphasis on high-level wheelchair basketball instruction for youth age 12-19.
Students who attend the camps are extremely independent, have a strong interest in competitive wheelchair basketball and are ready to participate in strenuous instructional sessions up to seven hours per day. Supplementary activities will include water skiing, a pool party and a bowling tournament.
Each camp has a staff of instructors, curriculum and housing arrangements. The two camps share meals and selected activities together.
Staff for the girls’ camp includes Margaret Stran, the UA Women’s Wheelchair Basketball head coach, Stephanie Wheeler, UA assistant coach, and other top U.S. and Canadian National Team players. Staff for the boy’s camp includes Miles Thompson, UA Men’s Wheelchair Basketball head coach, Jake Counts, UA assistant coach, and other players from the Alabama and U.S. National Men’s team.
Housing for both camps will be in separate sections of the new Riverside dormitories on the UA campus.
