
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A group of some 12 students from The University of Alabama will be among a field of 50 contestants competing in Birmingham for the title of Miss Alabama June 4-7.
The following UA students will compete for the title of Miss Alabama:
Meri-Glenn Freeman, Miss UA, a senior from Vestavia Hills
Brittany Finley, Miss City of Springville, a junior from Trussville
Jennifer Marshall, Miss Marshall County, a senior from Albertville
Meagan Muncher, Miss Jefferson County, a senior from Jasper
Meagan Myers, Miss Lake Wedowee, a law student from Vestavia Hills
Claire O’Rear, Miss Walker County, a senior from Jasper
Christy Pair, Miss Chelsea Area, a senior from Trussville
LeNa’ Powe, Miss Trussville, a graduate student from Birmingham
Stephanie Shelton, Miss Tuscaloosa, a senior from Tuscaloosa
Barri Elizabeth Stephenson, Miss Leeds Area, a freshman from Hoover
Shellie Street, Miss Painted Rock, a freshman from Mobile
Sara York, Miss Wiregrass Area, a freshman from Dothan
Contestants will be evaluated by five judges as they compete in categories of private interview, talent, swimsuit/physical fitness, evening wear and on-stage question. The winner of this title will represent the state at the Miss America competition in January 2009. The Miss Alabama competition will take place at Samford University.
Two UA students will compete in Miss America state competitions in Tennessee and Georgia. Competing in the Miss Tennessee Pageant June 18-21 is Nicole Jordan, Miss Henderson County, a freshman from Cordova, Tenn. Competing in the Miss Georgia Pageant June 25-28 is Whitney Cothran, Miss Columbus, a senior from Franklin, Ga.
The Miss America organization is a large scholarship organization for women with more than $45 million in cash and tuition scholarship assistance being awarded this year. The women who compete for the title of Miss America donate more than 500,000 hours each year to more than 12,000 community service projects making Miss America one of the largest community service organizations in the country.
