TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Micki McElya, assistant professor of American studies at The University of Alabama, will give a lecture on “Confronting the Mammy Problem in the Montgomery Bus Boycott” in the Ferguson Center Forum on Feb. 12 at 6 p.m.
McElya’s recent book “Clinging to Mammy: The Faithful Slave in Twentieth-Century America” was one of 10 works cited by the 2007 Myers Center Outstanding Book Awards Advancing Human Rights.
The event is open to students, staff, faculty and members of the community.
The event is sponsored by the UA Women’s Resource Center, the department of American studies, department of women’s studies, UA Counseling Center, and the Woman Involved in Learning and Leading program.
This lecture is part of the campus celebration of African-American Heritage Month.
There will be a reception that will follow the lecture.
