Investment scams tied to recession turmoil, state securities chief warns

…Robert Brooks, a professor of financial management at the University of Alabama, said would-be scam artists sometimes get creative with legitimate news events to concoct schemes. One notorious scam from years ago involved investing in the U.S. Treasury, promising a 10 percent return. That turned out to be a pyramid scheme, he said. “It seems to gravitate toward things that have done well recently, like gold. Somebody sees that gold prices have been up so they think this must be a good thing,” Brooks said…
