TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The leader of the opposition in the Canadian Senate is coming to The University of Alabama to give a pair of talks Thursday, Jan. 31 – one in English and one in French – about trends in Canada and current issues in the province of Quebec.
Sen. Céline Hervieux-Payette, a member of the Liberal Party who was appointed to the Canadian Senate in 1995, will present the following lectures, both of which are open to the public:
- The first talk, in English, is scheduled from 2 to 3:15 p.m. in room 127, a large lecture hall in the Biology building at UA. The topic is “Current Trends in Canada and Implications for the United States.”
- The second talk, in French, is scheduled from 5 to 6:15 p.m. in a smaller lecture hall, room 205, Gorgas Library. The topic will be “Québec Aujourd’hui” (Québec Today). A reception will follow the second talk.
Hervieux-Payette, a lawyer by trade, represents the province of Quebec and the Senatorial Division of Bedford. She rose to opposition leader in 2007. She also served as an elected member of Parliament from 1979 to 1985.
The department of modern languages and classics, the department of women’s studies, the department of political science, the College of Arts and Sciences, University Libraries, and Capstone International Program Center are sponsors.
The College of Arts and Sciences is the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships on the USA Today Academic All-American Teams.
