TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. Geoffrey Sayre-McCord, professor and chairman of the department of philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will give his lecture, “The State of Ethics,” Nov.13 at 7:30 p.m. at Lloyd Hall on The University of Alabama campus.
Sayre-McCord comes to UA as part of the “Philosophy Today” lecture series. The lecture is free and open to the public.
McCord will discuss his published research on moral theory, epistemology, and modern philosophy. He has edited “Essays on Moral Realism and Hume: Moral Philosophy.” Sayre McCord has presented papers throughout the United States and in Finland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the United Kingdom. He has also won a number of teaching awards, including UNC-Chapel Hill’s Tanner Award for Teaching Excellence in 2005.
“The state of ethics is a topic that should be of interest to many in the Tuscaloosa community, including social workers and members of the clergy,” said Dr. Scott Hestevold, chairman of UA’s department of philosophy. “Because Professor Sayre-McCord’s own research is focused on moral theory, he will bring to campus an informed overview of the contemporary scene.”
Sayre-McCord received his doctorate in philosophy in 1986 from The University of Pittsburgh. He received his bachelor’s degree in philosophy with Honors from Oberlin College in Ohio in 1979. He was a teaching fellow at the University of Pittsburgh from 1980 to 1983 and began teaching at UNC Chapel Hill in 1985. He has served as chairman in the philosophy department since 2001. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Auckland in New Zealand and the University of California at Irvine.
Sayre-McCord’s lecture is the third presentation in the Philosophy Today Lecture Series during the 2007-2008 academic year. The series will bring to UA some of the countries most noted experts on current issues in philosophy. These non-technical lectures will be geared toward a general audience and should be of interest to those in any profession or academic discipline.
The series is sponsored by the UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the department of philosophy, and alumni and friends of the department of philosophy. All lectures will be at 7:30 p.m. in 38 Lloyd Hall on the UA campus. Parking will be available in the lot on Hackberry Lane behind Nott and Gallalee Halls and in the parking deck at the intersection of Shelby Drive and Campus Drive.
Other speakers in the remainder of the 2007-2008 series are: Dr. Jonathan L. Kvanvig, Feb. 26, 2008; Dr. Ted Sider, Feb. 5, 2008; and Dr. Ernest Sosa, April 29, 2008.
