TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A month-long celebration of Hispanic-Latino culture will be held at The University of Alabama as part of National Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month.
From Sept. 15 – Oct. 15, UA organizations will host a variety of events highlighting the Hispanic-Latino presence on campus and in the community. Activities for the month include forums, movie screenings, dance workshops and book discussions in addition to several others.
In honor of the beginning of the heritage month, the UA Crossroads Community Center will sponsor a Kickoff Celebration on Friday, Sept. 14 in the Ferguson Center Game Room from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The event will feature U.S. and Latin American cuisine, music and information about the month’s festivities.
On Tuesday, Sept.18 at 7:05 p.m., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority will sponsor a Latin Dance Workshop in 301 Ferguson Center. The workshop is open to everyone and will feature traditional dances from a variety of cultures.
On Tuesday, Sept. 25 the UA Women’s Resource Center, Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Crossroads Community Center and the department of women’s studies will co-sponsor a book discussion of Celia Correas Zapata’s “Short Stories by Latin American Women: The Magic and the Real.” The discussion is open to the UA community and will be held at 6 p.m. in the Crossroads Lounge of the Ferguson Center.
Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month posters and buttons are available in the Crossroads Community Center, 232 Ferguson Center. All are welcome to stop by and pick one up.
