2007 UA Capstone Convocation Welcomes New Students

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Incoming students at The University of Alabama will have a chance to celebrate the beginning of their college careers in an inspiring occasion during the 2007 Capstone Convocation on Tuesday, Aug. 21 beginning at 7 p.m. in Coleman Coliseum.

“This event is designed to inspire new students and give them a sense of what is possible as they begin their endeavors at the Capstone,” says Dr. Hank Lazer, UA associate provost for academic affairs, who will be moderating the event.

UA President Robert E. Witt, SGA President R.B.Walker and UA student leaders from various organizations will make brief remarks and will join with all participants in reciting the Capstone Creed, a key part of the event.

Also presenting or performing at the event will be the UA Brass Quintet, Derryck “D-Sharp,” Gleaton, a sophomore, hip-hop violinist who has performed several times at the Apollo Theater; Jenny Wells from UA’s nationally recognized speech and debate team; Stephen Black, director of the UA Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility; Callie Corley, an undergraduate student who made a film for the inaugural Documenting Justice class; and India Williams, a junior from Tuscaloosa who had gone through orientation at Loyola and came to UA due to Hurricane Katrina.

All new students are asked to attend. Students are encouraged to take the Crimson Ride buses to and from the Coliseum. Extra buses will be provided.

A dessert reception will immediately follow the convocation.

The event is open to all new students as well as returning faculty and staff. This is the fifth year the convocation has been held.

Classes at UA begin Wednesday, Aug. 22.
